About the Role
The Centre for Marine Science and Technology (CMST), a globally recognised leader in underwater acoustics and marine research, seeks a Senior Research Officer with experience in multi‐day offshore fieldwork to join our international team.
In this role you will run field programmes that advance research in marine soundscapes and acoustic ecology, typically participating in 4–6 offshore expeditions per year, each lasting 7–10 days. The role requires working under deck on a laptop, so strong sea‐legs are essential.
Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
* Managing and maintaining bioacoustic, underwater acoustic, and terrestrial acoustic equipment.
* Designing and constructing equipment mounts and moorings for field deployments.
* Maintaining workshop stock lists and ordering items as needed.
* Downloading, archiving, and managing datasets.
* Analyzing complex datasets and contributing to publications and conference presentations.
* Liaising with project stakeholders in industry, government, and NGOs.
* Supporting research students.
* Ensuring compliance with safety, legislative, and university policies.
Selection Criteria
* Degree (preferably honours) in a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience and training.
* Significant experience in scientific fieldwork, especially multi‐day offshore expeditions with nights on a rocking ship.
* Strong problem‐solving, analytical, and organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, meet tight deadlines, and work within budget constraints.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to work autonomously and as part of a collegial, social team.
* Ability to obtain baseline security clearance.
Role Requirements
* Current work rights in Australia matching the tenure of this fixed‐term role.
* Eligibility to obtain and maintain an Australian Government security clearance (Negative Vetting 1).
* Successful applicants will be subject to a National Police Clearance and background checks to Curtin's satisfaction.
* Willingness and fitness for interstate and/or overseas travel.
