Overview
Legal Services, a not‐for‐profit legal assistance provider, seeks lawyers to support the criminal legal needs of residents in the Port Augusta and Whyalla regions. The role involves in‐court representation and advice for individuals charged with criminal offences.
Roles and Responsibilities
* Provide advice and representation as a duty lawyer at Courts and prisons in the Northern Region.
* Assist persons arrested and in custody with bail applications and simple guilty pleas.
* Conduct criminal file case load in Magistrates and Youth Courts and appear as counsel on non‐trial hearings.
* Take on major indicative cases in the District Court.
* Appear in less serious trials, appeals and bail reviews from Magistrates and Youth Courts to the Supreme Court.
* Share duty lawyer and file work responsibilities with the Northern Regions team.
Qualifications
LSC2 (Lawyer)
* Admitted to the Supreme Court of South Australia and High Court of Australia, or eligible for admission.
* Unrestricted Category C Practising Certificate (or eligible for application).
* Minimum 2 years post‐admission legal experience.
* Demonstrated ability to give concise, logical, reliable advice with skill and diligence.
* Strong relational skills with judiciary, support staff, government and non‐government agencies, peers and the public.
* Experience in file management, including practice management tools.
* Broad knowledge of governmental and private agencies in the social welfare and justice system.
LSC1 (Duty Lawyer)
* Admitted to the Supreme Court of South Australia and High Court of Australia, or eligible for admission.
* Category C Practising Certificate (or eligible for application).
* Experience establishing trust and confidence with clients and key stakeholders.
* Broad knowledge of governmental and private agencies in the social welfare and justice system.
* High quality, concise advice with logical assessment and diligence.
* Strong relational skills with judiciary, staff, agencies, peers and the public.
