About the role Mater Mothers’ Hospital has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, dynamic and experienced nurse leader to join our team as the Nurse Unit Manager for our Cardiac/Surgical Neonatal Intensive Care Unit on a full-time, maximum-term contract until the 8 th of March 2026. Mater Mothers' Hospital is a leader in the provision of high-quality care and clinical practice offering integrated services across maternity, gynaecology, neonatology, and maternal fetal medicine. Along with being the perinatal centre for the delivery of all antenatally diagnosed complex cardiac conditions, the Mater Mothers’ Hospital comprises the Neonatal Critical Care Unit which is the quaternary surgical neonatal intensive care unit for South-East and Central Queensland. The Neonatal Critical Care Unit (NICU) is a 79-bed perinatal tertiary referral centre which provides care for approximately 2000 babies per year. Within this unit is a cohort of highly specialised and complex babies requiring intensive care in collaboration with multiple subspecialty teams from the state-wide children’s hospital. You will be part of large multidisciplinary teams caring for babies with cardiac, surgical, neurosurgical, renal and other complex conditions while leading the passionate nursing team that care for these babies and their families. Salary range: $71.42 - $76.80 (Nurse Manager) per hour plus 12% superannuation and access to not-for-profit salary packaging up to $15,900 access to many staff benefits! What you’ll be doing The successful applicant will be responsible for the clinical and operational management of the Cardiac/Surgical NICU utilising strong leadership and problem-solving skills The responsibilities: Ensures high quality patient care, where advanced clinical skills and knowledge underpin care coordination, collaboration and communication for excellence in patient outcomes Evaluates effectiveness of care in achieving predicted outcomes and reviews plans in accordance with evaluated data and in collaboration with relevant staff and ensures effective discharge planning processes are initiated Collaborates with other health professionals and community services in the delivery of health care Acts as a patient advocate ensuring patients are informed and consent is gained prior to treatment, investigation and management as appropriate and assists/negotiates sensitively with patients where there may be barriers to understanding Establishes priorities for resolution of identified health needs in consultation with the patient or group of patients Identifies and intervenes proactively where circumstances contribute to an unsafe environment for patients/relatives or staff and escalates these concerns Supervises and coordinates the clinical activities of the service to ensure consistent delivery of excellent person-centred care, focused on maximising the health outcomes for patients Creates a workplace environment that encourages collaboration within and across health care teams to optimise outcomes Manages the resources of the unit to achieve both budget and service delivery targets whilst maximising service delivery outcomes for patients Monitors, reviews and takes action to ensure material and human resource levels remain within the agreed targets About you To be considered for the role you will have: Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia A post graduate neonatal qualification or equivalent Minimum of five years full time experience in specific clinical specialty including experience as a Clinical Nurse or other leadership role Extensive leadership experience within a nursing unit in a complex hospital environment High-level interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills with the ability to engage with internal stakeholders at various levels to achieve Proven ability to lead and manage a clinical team to optimise clinical outcomes utilising risk management and quality improvement principles Ability to effectively manage a clinical cost centre Understanding and application of contemporary human resource management practices Positive mentor and role model capabilities with a focus on enhancing Mater's value driven culture to achieve excellence in the care and ultimately the corporate performance of Mater Health Services Applications close on Wednesday the 13 th of August 2025.
