Senior Mechanic – Alice Springs, NT, Australia

The Role
The Vehicle Mechanic Team Leader performs skilled mechanic work on light, heavy, or specialty vehicles (e.g., trucks, earthmoving or passenger vehicles) and leads workshop operations and trade staff. You will work hands-on fixing, diagnosing, overhauling and maintaining vehicles while supervising and mentoring a small team of mechanics. You will help keep downtime low, ensure quality outputs, and maintain a safe and customer-focused workshop. This is a Monday-Friday position that collaborates with Maintenance Superintendents to sustain best-practice standards and enable reliable, 24/7/365 facility operational support.
Responsibilities
* Diagnose, repair and service vehicle systems (engine, transmission, brakes, HVAC, hydraulics, electrical, suspension).
* Perform planned preventative maintenance, inspections, overhauls, troubleshooting and field repairs.
* Ensure quality workmanship using diagnostic tools and maintain compliance with manufacturer standards and internal procedures.
* Lead, coach and mentor the trade team, including performance monitoring and upskilling.
* Oversee daily workshop flow, balance reactive and scheduled work, workload planning and workshop management.
* Liaise with site teams to ensure materials are available for tasks.
* Maintain accurate records of labour hours, work orders, maintenance logs and vehicle history per OEM recommendations and internal processes.
* Communicate with peers to ensure best-practice standardization and continuous improvement.
* Deliver training to develop and maintain staff competence.
* Review trend data and implement modifications to maintenance plans and procedures as needed.
* Maintain a safe work environment by following EHS/WHS policies and procedures.
* Other reasonable duties as required by the direct line manager or delegate.
Qualifications
Minimum Essential
* Certificate III in a Facilities Trades
Desirable
* Trade Certificate IV in Leadership and Management
* Certificate IV in Training and Assessment
* Certificate IV in Project Management/PMP
Competencies
* Completion of all relevant and directed system and role-based training requirements
* Proficiency in applying best practice operations, technical and management principles
* Strong understanding of WHS/EHS policies and procedures
* Strong understanding of facilities O&M requirements
* Strong understanding of equipment maintenance requirements (preventive, predictive, corrective)
* Problem solving, decision making and analytical skills
Experience
* Demonstrated experience in vehicle maintenance
* Demonstrated experience with site facilities systems, infrastructure and equipment
* Demonstrated experience providing leadership to trade personnel
Licences & Training
* Drivers Licence
* Desirable: White Card, Confined Space, Working at Heights, Forklift License, Elevated Work Platform, First Aid
Work Environment & Compliance
* Medical fitness to perform physical tasks and operate equipment as required
* Adherence to Quality Program and customer contracts
* Participation in pre-employment checks and EHS requirements
