Treasury's Central Forecasting Team (CFT) produces the economic forecasts and projections that underpin the Australian Government's economic narrative, working with teams across Macroeconomic Conditions and Population Division (MCPD) and Treasury. These forecasts support government decision making and are published in the Budget, Mid-Year Economic and Fiscal Outlook and the Intergenerational Report.


About International, Financial Markets and Commodities Unit

Treasury's International, Financial Markets and Commodities Unit (IFC) forecasts and provides advice on global economic and financial market conditions, with a focus on Australia's major trading partners and commodities, and issues of direct relevance to the Australian economy.


About the Roles

Treasury is looking for talented, team-oriented, and highly motivated staff to fill positions in the Central Forecasting Team and the International, Financial Markets and Commodities Unit within MCPD.

Assistant Directors in CFT play an important role in the production of these forecasts and narratives, the development and maintenance of forecasting infrastructure and the delivery of projects aimed at improving CFT's analytical frameworks. It is a highly specialised forecasting role that requires significant experience and modelling and coding capabilities. This position demands strong capability to lead projects and work programs, deliver, and innovate in a complex and high-pressure environment. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute positively to the team's performance, development and wellbeing.

The role requires excellent conceptual and analytical skills and a capacity to communicate clearly to a variety of audiences. Specific responsibilities include:

* Leading aspects of forecasting processes within MCPD.
* Strengthening Treasury's forecasting frameworks and infrastructure.
* Building the modelling and forecasting capabilities of staff across the Division.
* Developing influential analysis to brief the Treasurer and Senior Treasury Executives on macroeconomic developments and policy settings.
* Leading strategic projects across the Division.

The successful applicant will have demonstrated experience:

* Applying macroeconomic theory and frameworks, including working with macroeconometric models, preparing macroeconomic forecasts and exercising professional judgement.
* Contributing positively to the growth of junior staff and building technical capability.
* Communicating clearly and succinctly to influence a broad range of stakeholders.
* Operating in a dynamic setting as a team player, working productively across the Department and exercising sound judgement.


Assistant Director, International, Financial Markets and Commodities Unit

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the unit's financial market analysis, including:

* Delivery of financial market briefing and influential advice for the Treasurer and Senior Treasury Executives on financial market developments and policy settings.
* The integration of financial market perspectives into domestic and overseas economic forecasts and narratives.
* Working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to inform Treasury's understanding of and advice on financial market developments.

As Assistant Director, the successful candidate is expected to have well‑developed leadership skills, experience in managing junior staff members, and experience in organising workflows to deliver strategic priorities. They will be expected to contribute positively to the team's performance, development and wellbeing.

The successful applicant will have demonstrated experience:

* Applying financial market, international economy and/or macroeconomic frameworks, including working with forecasting and/or financial models.
* Communicating clearly and succinctly to influence a broad range of stakeholders.
* Building relationships through identifying and managing key stakeholders across different organisations.
* Contributing positively to the growth of junior staff and building technical capability.
* Operating in a fast‑paced and changing environment as a team player, working productively across the Department and exercising sound judgement.


Desirable Qualifications / Experience


Central Forecasting Team

Tertiary qualification(s) in a relevant field, including, but not limited to, economics, mathematics, or public policy.

* Ideally, we are looking for candidates with at least five to eight years' relevant work experience.

Experience in one or more of the following will be particularly well‑regarded:

* Economic research and analysis.
* Government policy development and assessment.


International, Financial Markets and Commodities Unit

Tertiary qualification(s) in a relevant field, including, but not limited to, finance and economics.

Experience in one or more of the following will be particularly well‑regarded:

* Financial market research and analysis.
* Financial market operations.

Ideally, at least five relevant work experience.
