Director of Strategic Communications

MND Australia is the national peak body of state organisations that support those living with and impacted by motor neurone disease (MND). Since 1993, we have been the voice for the MND community. We work collaboratively with our member organisations, the state MND Associations, to inform, influence and raise awareness and understanding of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) at a national level to improve care and to advance research to ultimately end MND.

Our Mission is to improve the lives of everyone impacted by MND through advancing research, advocacy and high-quality care.

About the Role

The Strategic Communications and Marketing Adviser supports the organisation's advocacy agenda as well as the communications, marketing and promotion of key initiatives including MND Connect, CALD Resources, Dysarthria and other speech difficulties, and Self-Advocacy. The position works collaboratively with the MND team and State Association staff as well as people living with MND to promote and share innovative information resources, tools and awareness campaigns.

This senior leadership role reports directly to the CEO and combines strategic oversight with hands-on delivery. You will drive a unified approach across states, elevate brand awareness, and spearhead national fundraising. Your work will fuel growth in donations to support research, care, and advocacy.

In addition, the position will support a holistic approach to MND Australia communications activities and events.

Key responsibilities include:

Promote the advocacy agenda and support advocacy activity.

Design, development and implementation of the communications strategies for grant funded projects.

Lead the design, launch and optimisation of a new national awareness campaign, leveraging pro bono media partnerships to build on 2025's momentum.

Coordinate national communications and fundraising activities across all states and territories:

a. Manage the development of governance frameworks, toolkits and training for consistency and best practice.

b. Facilitate regular forums to share insights and track progress.

Pro-active identification of media, marketing and promotional activities

Engagement strategies and activities to stakeholders including engaging people living with MND

Development of holistic marketing and communication approaches to all MND Australia activity

Other duties as directed.

About You

Demonstrated experience in communications, marketing and advocacy activity

Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain relationships with staff as well as a diverse range of stakeholders.

High-level written, editing and proofing skills, including traditional and digital multimedia.

Self-motivated, strong problem solving and multitasking abilities.

Ability to work both independently and as an effective team member.

Experience planning and executing awareness campaigns.

Experience planning and executing high quality events.

Position Type

This is a fulltime contract position until 30 June 2026 (with a view to permanency), ideally based in Canberra, reporting to the Chief Executive Officer. This position has management responsibility for one position.
