Role Description
As a Quantum Hardware / Microwave Engineer, you will design, fabricate, and experimentally characterise superconducting microwave devices that sit at the heart of AQC's R&D program. Your work will span circuit design and simulation, experimental setup and measurement (often at cryogenic temperatures), and development of the software that controls instruments and processes data.
In this role, you will:
* Design and fabricate microwave and superconducting circuits for quantum and other advanced microwave applications.
* Plan and run experimental microwave measurements, including setup, calibration, troubleshooting, and optimisation, in cryogenic systems.
* Develop and maintain research software for instrument control, automation, and data acquisition/processing (primarily in Python or similar).
* Work collaboratively as part of. a technical team, sharing insights and iterating quickly based on experimental results.
This is a lab‑centric, experiment‑driven role suited to someone who enjoys owning problems end‑to‑end and working directly with hardware and data.
About you
You are an experimentalist at heart who enjoys combining theory, hardware, and software to make real systems work in the lab. You are comfortable working independently day‑to‑day while contributing actively to a collaborative technical team.
To be successful, you will have:
1. Experience in:
- Microwave design
- Experimental microwave measurement, instrument control and automation
- Data acquisition and processing
- Research software programming and development
2. High‑level programming skill in Python or similar languages.
1. Ability to work effectively in a technical teamwork environment.
2. Bachelor‑level qualification in Electronic/Microwave Engineering, Physics, or similar, with 3+ years of relevant professional experience.
3. Full, unrestricted work rights in Australia.
It would be an advantage if you also have:
* PhD or Masters in experimental physics, electronic or microwave engineering, or a closely related discipline.
* Experience with: experimental microelectronic circuit design for superconducting or other quantum systems, Micro‑ and/or nano‑fabrication experience, cryogenic measurement.
* Familiarity with CAD circuit design tools, and experimental lab software frameworks.
* Experience in engineering project management.
In return, you will
* Receive a competitive salary aligned to your skills and experience.
* Participate in AQC's employee share option program.
* Work with a small, focused, technically excellent team in a purpose‑built national facility for cryogenic electronics measurement.
