**About the role**:
The Infrastructure and Operations Lead provides technical leadership to a small team of IT experts supporting the department's high performance computing facility (Science Data and Compute - SDC).
SDC is a Linux based infrastructure that is used to store, manage and process large scale data collections and plays an important role in providing an evidence base to NSW government for data-driven decision making. The SDC Image and Data Library is supported through lustre storage and a Data Management Facility (DMF) tape library of >20PB capacity. It provides the source of truth for a range of satellite and aerial imagery products, LIDAR and drone data and other environmental datasets such as wave modelling, atmospheric and climate modelling etc.
The SDC support team works collaboratively with research teams, scientists and programmers to design, build and maintain all aspects of the Science Data and Compute facility to service the needs of the Department's staff and scientists.
**This role will**:
- Lead a small team to design, implement and manage storage, computer and network infrastructure of the Science Data Compute facility to provide a robust system for the department's scientists and collaborators.
- Provide leadership and advice to the support team including contractors in day-to-day operations on SDC.
- Manage operations and oversee day to day administration by the support team of the SDC hardware, OS, network fabrics, platform software, tape management and data centre related activities, while prioritising operations stability.
- Lead development and implementation of policies and processes, business continuity and disaster recovery planning with support from the team and technical consultant.
- Oversee incident and problem management and help with troubleshooting/debugging.
- Provide technical support to SDC users and educate science teams, researchers and general users in the use of technology and processes to improve productivity and performance.
- Contribute to strategy development, future planning and optimisation of high-performance computing.
**Essential Requirements**:
- Extensive experience working in similar roles managing HPC and storage infrastructure.
- Demonstrated experience configuring and administrating petabyte scale storage solutions, for example parallel filesystems (e.g. lustre) and/or hierarchical storage management such as Data Management Facility (DMF) using tape libraries.
- Proficient programming skills, e.g., in Python, bash, and C/C++
- Demonstrated leadership skills at strategic and operational levels including the ability to effectively support/communicate with staff from diverse technical backgrounds.
- Highly developed problem-solving skills to design and implement innovative solutions for technical problems
