We are seeking a highly motivated, trade‐qualified metal machinist or experienced technical specialist to join our team as a Senior Technical Officer. This key role supports innovative teaching and research by providing expertise in design and fabrication to deliver high‐quality educational outcomes for undergraduate and postgraduate students across a range of disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
* Guide and manage students and staff in a hands‐on learning environment, supporting the use and maintenance of manufacturing equipment and ensuring safe, reliable workshop operations.
* Contribute to engaging training programmes and events, and mentor junior staff while assisting with outreach initiatives such as the Mobile Makerspace program.
* Maintain high workplace health and safety standards through inductions, training, supervision, and compliance processes; develop risk assessments and standard operating procedures to support a proactive safety culture.

About You
* Completion of a recognised trade qualification as a metal machinist or equivalent, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience, education and training.
* Strong capability in both manual and digital fabrication methods, with expertise across a broad range of fabrication techniques such as milling, turning, welding and CNC sheet metal fabrication.
* Proficiency in CAD design packages.
* Experience in industrial or educational workshop/makerspace environments.
* Well‐developed problem‐solving skills with the ability to plan, prioritise and adapt.
* Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills, including clear documentation.
* Commitment to university values and an interest in teaching, training and mentoring others.
