The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) is the national regulator responsible for assessing, registering and overseeing agricultural and veterinary chemicals supplied in Australia. Its role is to ensure Australians have access to safe and effective chemicals that protect human, animal and environmental health, while also supporting agricultural productivity and trade. As an independent statutory authority, the APVMA monitors compliance with relevant legislation and maintains national records and regulatory decisions relating to agvet chemicals.
About the Role The APS5 Risk Manager works within the Agricultural Chemicals Program to evaluate applications for the registration of agricultural chemical products. This role applies regulatory frameworks, scientific advice and risk assessment principles to assess product safety, efficacy and trade impacts, and provide recommendations to decision makers. You will review technical information, contribute to regulatory documentation, liaise with internal and external stakeholders, and support timely processing of applications within legislated timeframes.
Key Duties
* Assess applications for agricultural chemical products in line with legislation and policy
* Evaluate scientific and technical information using established risk assessment approaches
* Develop recommendations to support registration decision-making
* Prepare correspondence, reports and supporting regulatory documentation
* Consult with internal and external stakeholders and contribute to resolving issues
* Manage workload to meet legislated timeframes and quality requirements
* Maintain compliance with APVMA legislation, confidentiality requirements and APS standards
Essential Attributes / Skills / Experience
* Tertiary qualifications in a relevant scientific discipline such as biology, agricultural or horticultural science, entomology, weed science, pharmacology, toxicology, or physiology
* Knowledge of, or ability to quickly gain an understanding of, the APVMA's regulatory environment, legislation, and risk assessment principles
* Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret scientific information
* Demonstrated ability to prioritise work, maintain accuracy and meet timeframes
* Well-developed written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build productive stakeholder relationships
* Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team
