PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
As a Computer Systems Technician, you'll be responsible for maintaining and optimising NPC Media's critical IT infrastructure, including servers and storage hardware. You will diagnose and repair hardware issues, perform compatibility testing, and ensure operating systems such as Windows and Linux are installed and maintained for maximum efficiency, security, and reliability.
You will be expected to demonstrate strong technical troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm under pressure. A proactive, action‑oriented mindset and commitment to following company policies and safety standards are essential for success in this role.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
* Diagnose and repair hardware issues for servers and storage devices, including physical component replacement.
* Perform diagnostic tests to verify hardware functionality and ensure proper installation.
* Test and validate new hardware for compatibility prior to deployment.
* Install, maintain, and optimize operating systems (Windows, Linux) for performance, security, and reliability.
* Provide guidance and support to other technicians on complex tasks.
* Collaborate with the wider Technology team to ensure hardware/software compatibility.
* Coordinate with vendors for hardware procurement, warranties, and advanced repairs.
* Support implementation of system updates, patches, and upgrades to maintain security and performance.
* Monitor hardware health and performance using tools such as Icinga (experience with Icinga is an advantage).
* Perform physical tasks including lifting and racking equipment as required.
* Maintain accurate inventory of hardware assets and lifecycle documentation.
* Monitor resource utilization and recommend upgrades or replacements (capacity planning).
* Assist in hardware‑related aspects of backup and disaster recovery strategies.
* Ensure hardware configurations meet security and compliance standards.
* Explore opportunities to automate hardware monitoring and reporting.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Essential Experience & Skills
* Strong knowledge of server and storage hardware troubleshooting and repair.
* Experience with diagnostic tools and hardware testing procedures.
* Proficiency in installing and maintaining Windows, Linux, and Unix operating systems.
* Familiarity with hardware monitoring tools (e.g., Icinga, Nagios, or similar).
* Understanding of network fundamentals (VLANs, cabling), and familiarity with network protocols and services (e.g., TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP).
* Knowledge of system updates, patches, and security hardening.
* Hands‑on experience in data centre or infrastructure support environments.
* Proven ability to rack, cable, and physically install hardware. Ability to lift and rack equipment (typically up to 20–25 kg).
* Strong problem‑solving and analytical skills.
* Ability to work collaboratively with software, network, and vendor teams.
* Excellent communication and collaboration skills. Ability to develop quality procedure documentation.
* Ability to prioritise tasks and work under pressure during critical incidents.
Qualifications
* Diploma or degree in Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).
* Experience applying ITIL principles for incident and change management to ensure effective and timely infrastructure support.
* Relevant industry certifications (e.g., CompTIA Server+, Microsoft Certified: Windows Server Administration, or Linux certification) are highly regarded.
