About The Role
The Junior Trader is responsible for the sourcing and procurement of raw materials critical to feedmill operations. This role ensures supply continuity, mitigates risk, and optimizes total cost of ownership through expert negotiation, market analysis, and supplier relationship management. The Commodity Buyer plays a key role in cost reduction initiatives, supports new product development, and enables leadership to focus on strategic priorities by relieving them of day-to-day procurement duties.
Key Responsibilities:
The major areas of focus in the responsibilities may be expanded or contracted to suit specific situations or instances.
* Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive sourcing strategies for the assigned commodity, considering supply market dynamics, technology trends, and business needs.
* Identify, evaluate, and qualify potential new suppliers to expand the supply base and ensure competitive pricing.
* Lead complex, data-driven negotiations for pricing, payment terms, supply agreements, and technical specifications to secure favourable commercial outcomes.
* Manage all contractual documentation ensuring legal and commercial compliance.
* Conduct detailed "should-cost" analysis, cost modelling, and benchmarking to identify opportunities for cost reduction
* Track, forecast, and report on commodity price movements, inflation impact, and realized cost savings against targets.
* Monitor geopolitical, environmental, and financial factors that may impact
* Ensure all procurement activities adhere to regulatory requirements and company compliance policies.
* Collaborate with nutritionists and production teams to align raw material specifications with feed formulation requirements
* Maintain accurate procurement records and contribute to audit readiness and traceability.
Experience, qualifications & personal attributes:
* Minimum 3 years of experience in sourcing, procurement, or supply chain management, specifically focused on direct materials/commodities
* Qualification from a recognised Australian tertiary institution in Supply Chain Management or relevant equivalent experience
* Professional certification such as Certified Purchasing Manager (CPM), Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM), or equivalent, is highly preferred.
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of presenting complex supply chain issues and recommendations clearly to management and cross-functional teams.
* Proven ability to conduct Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis and develop robust "should-cost" models.
* Prior experience in a global manufacturing environment and familiarity with logistics and trade compliance is highly desirable.
* Exceptional Negotiation and Influencing Skills: Ability to build rapport with suppliers while maintaining a firm position to achieve competitive advantages.
* Committed to transparent and ethical procurement practices in all supplier interactions.
* Must be a permanent resident of Australia or be an Australian citizen; hold a current and clean driver's licence and have own transport.
