Formed in 2008, Canberra Hospitals Foundation (CHF) entered a new and exciting stage becoming a recognised charity with a renewed strategy and philanthropic model. Canberra Hospitals Foundation continues to support the hospital experience and health outcomes of patients and their families in the Canberra region, by identifying and responding to the areas of greatest need through the facilitation of community support.

The new entity structure has allowed us to reach out to the ACT community and seek donations, run events and campaigns and to raise income. Our other responsibilities are to raise awareness in the community about the Foundation's purpose and vision; to facilitate connections between and within the community and the hospitals to foster relationships and enhance patient and family experiences; and allocate funding with a transparent and consultative approach.

This position supports the Gift Stop located at The Canberra Hospital, Garran.

CHF Gift Shop exists to generate meaningful revenue that directly supports patient care and wellbeing. Every item we sell contributes to improving lives—turning everyday purchases into acts of kindness. We are more than a shop we are a place of pause, of joy, and of human connection. In an often clinical and stressful environment, our shop offers a brief escape, a moment of normalcy, and an opportunity for people to feel seen, supported, and uplifted.

Position Overview:

The casual retail assistant is responsible for delivering high levels of customer service in the Canberra Hospitals Foundation (CHF) Gift Shop and maintaining high standards of store presentation, including visual merchandising. The role supports day-to-day operations of the shop and includes supervisory responsibilities outside of the Gift Shop Manager's working hours and during periods of planned leave.

Working hours and days:

* We're looking for someone to start immediately in a casual position. This role involves working up to 21 hours per week across five days, from Tuesday to Saturday. Shifts will be in the afternoon, assisting with closing of the shop. The days/hours can be flexible and will be discussed during interviews.
* There may be additional hours required when staff members are on planned leave or sick leave.
* The hourly rate offered for this role will be dependent on the individuals experience and skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

* Provide exceptional customer service to patients, families, staff, and visitors
* Prioritise daily tasks, demonstrate initiative, and work effectively with minimal supervision as part of a team
* Maintain thorough product knowledge to assist customers and support sales
* Ensure accuracy in point-of-sale (POS) transactions and handling of cash and EFT
* Support the implementation and maintenance of visual merchandising standards
* Assist with stock handling, replenishment, and management, including unpacking, pricing, rotating, and displaying stock
* Maintain store cleanliness, safety, and general presentation at all times
* Comply with legislative requirements and CHF policies, including Work Health and Safety (WHS), Code of Conduct, ACT Worksafe, and food handling standards
* Open and close the shop as rostered, following set procedures
* Provide support and direction to volunteers when present

Supervisory Responsibilities:

* Act in a supervisory capacity from the time the Shop Manager finishes their shift until close of business each day
* Manage end-of-day processes, including closing registers, securing premises, and reporting any incidents or issues
* Step up to manage the shop during periods of planned leave or absence of the Shop Manager, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations, including volunteer oversight and adherence to CHF procedures

Key Skills and Requirements:

* High level of customer service and communication skills
* Friendly, helpful, confident, and engaging personality
* Basic knowledge of sales principles and retail stock practices
* Good organisational and time management skills
* Ability to manage physical aspects of retail shifts, including standing for long periods, restocking, and manual handling
* Ability to remain calm and professional in a hospital environment

Mandatory Training Requirements:

* Fire Safety Training
* Food Safety in a Retail Environment
* Manual Handling and Liftin

Assessments and Security Requirements:

* Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP) registration
* National Police Check
