Department of Primary Industries and Regions
Job reference: 675348
Location: 5065 - GLENSIDE
Job status: Short Term Contract
Eligibility: Open to Everyone
The Opportunity
We have a prospect for a Veterinary Officer, Epidemiology and Risk to be part of our Biosecurity Division within the Department of Primary Industries and Regions.
PIRSA's Animal Health program protects and facilitates market access and livestock productivity, public health and consumer confidence through the health, welfare, quality, safety and image of South Australian livestock and livestock products, and animals. Global trade access for livestock and livestock products increasingly requires demonstrated minimum standards of animal health and welfare. The Animal Biosecurity group provides a system for animal disease early warning and early detection of exotic diseases; develops programmes for data collection to allow monitoring of animal health status and proof of disease freedom; and maintains capacity for emergency animal disease management.
The Veterinary Officer role contributes to the management of the risks to South Australia posed by animal pests and diseases. The Epidemiology and risk program plays a critical role in the management of epidemiological reporting, animal health risk management, and emergency animal disease preparedness programs.
The Veterinary Officer - Epidemiology and Risk will work with other staff on the development of epidemiological and risk-based decision-making capacity to support emergency animal disease preparedness and response, and other animal health program activities. This role will undertake a range of day‐to‐day activities, contributing to the development of policies in epidemiology and broader animal health programs, completion of epidemiological and risk analyses, and provision of technical advice into emergency animal disease preparedness activities and other animal health programs. Working as part of the Epidemiology and Risk team, this role provides an opportunity to assist in building PIRSA's preparedness to respond to disease threats such as highly pathogenic avian influenza, foot‐and‐mouth disease, lumpy skin disease, and African swine fever.
