About the role
Mater Centre for Neurosciences is currently seeking applications for an Epilepsy Fellow or Senior Epilepsy Fellow to join the Neurology and Epilepsy team on a full‐time, 12‐month fixed term. This position is based at the Mater Centre for Neurosciences, Mater Hospital, South Brisbane campus.
This role is ideal for a neurology trainee or a post‐FRACP neurologist seeking sub‐specialty training in epileptology and training in EEG interpretation (level 2 or 3, depending upon prior experience). For those with suitable prior Epilepsy sub‐specialty experience, a Senior Epilepsy Fellow position may be offered.
The Mater Epilepsy Unit comprises a team of five epileptologists, led by Prof. Aileen McGonigal as Clinical Director and four Neurophysiology/EEG technologists. Facilities include four video‐EEG monitoring beds and an outpatient and ambulatory EEG service. The Fellow will receive training in outpatient and inpatient care of adult epilepsy patients, with an emphasis on refractory focal epilepsy and presurgical evaluation. The Fellow will develop expertise in EEG and video‐EEG interpretation and will have the opportunity to gain experience in stereo‐EEG methodology. The multi‐disciplinary nature of epilepsy care and presurgical evaluation will be emphasised, with regular clinical case discussions including input from colleagues in psychiatry, neuropsychology, clinical psychology, speech and language pathology, neurosurgery, neuroradiology, paediatric neurology, and a dedicated Epilepsy nurse team.
Mater Centre for Neurosciences also includes neurologists with specialised interests in neuroimmunology, multiple sclerosis, cognitive neurology, neuromuscular diseases, and the largest, most diversely skilled group of neurosurgeons in the state.
The Epilepsy Fellow will have the opportunity to participate in the weekly general neurology clinical meeting, journal club, neuroradiology meeting and medical grand rounds as well as attendance at Brain School. The Fellow is encouraged to attend relevant national and international meetings such as the Epilepsy Society of Australia and ANZAN.
