Join a visionary team at UQ’s School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, where innovation meets impact. We’re seeking an Associate Professor to lead teaching and research in Software Engineering and/or Cyber Security within our Cyber Security and Software Engineering (CSS) discipline. You’ll contribute to cutting-edge areas such as Engineering Trustworthy Software, Binary Code Analysis, Operating Systems Security, AI-assisted Software Testing and DevOps, AI for Cyber Security, and Vulnerability Assessment. This role offers the chance to apply generative AI and large language models (LLM) to real-world challenges—making software more secure by design or through proactive threat detection. Key responsibilities will include: Teaching: Develop and deliver courses, engage in curriculum design, coordinate courses, assess students, provide academic counselling, and adhere to university teaching rules. Research: Maintain a strong record of high-impact research as lead contributor in top-tier international journals and disciplinary publications. Initiate and lead competitive research funding applications as chief investigator. Lead the transfer of research outcomes to end users, including commercialisation of UQ intellectual property. Contribute to discipline service through editorial board or leadership positions. Shape strategic research agendas and represent the discipline in leading academic forums and utilise best practice research methodologies. Supervision and Researcher Development: Supervise students, recruit and manage employees, provide performance feedback and training, resolve conflicts, and ensure correct remuneration and benefits. Citizenship and Service: Develop partnerships, demonstrate leadership through mentoring, engage in internal service roles and committees, perform administrative functions, provide support to colleagues, and uphold university values. About You It is expected that the successful applicant will have the demonstrated capability and willingness to teach into areas within the school such as: Introductory and intermediate programming courses Cyber security systems at the introductory, intermediate or advanced undergraduate level Cyber security individual capstone projects and research methods Software Engineering topics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels Software Engineering or Cyber Security team projects at the introductory or intermediate undergraduate level You will bring: A PhD in Software Engineering and/or Cyber Security A sustained record of excellence in teaching and research International recognition and a strong publication profile Proven success in securing and managing significant research funding Experience in leading research teams and mentoring junior academics A commitment to inclusive education and student success Expertise in curriculum design and pedagogical innovation A demonstrated record of leadership in service and engagement The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, education check.
