Department of Education WA
Teacher
Posted: 13 June
Offer description

This is a 6-month fixed term, full-time position commencing Term 3, 2026 with possible extension (6 to 12 months).

Mount Margaret Aboriginal Community is situated 32 kilometres south‐west of Laverton on a recently sealed road and 330 km north‐east of WA's largest provincial city, Kalgoorlie. The school and community have an excellent relationship with local mining companies who support the school in various ways, including our healthy lunch program and providing opportunities for employment.

Mount Margaret School exists as an integral part of the Mount Margaret Community. It is committed to providing a flexible, caring learning environment that recognises Aboriginal culture to ensure learning opportunities for all students to achieve success through a quality education.

The Role

This role has been created for Semester 2 of 2026 in order to collaboratively support an 8‐year‐old student with complex needs and to provide relief time for staff professional learning and Duties Other than Teaching (DOTT). The intended focus is on building school capacity to most effectively support neurodiverse students, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), intellectual disability, and complex communication challenges.

The teaching role is envisioned to comprise approximately 0.6 FTE to collaboratively support students with complex needs—including planning and supporting students to access the classroom teachers and the curriculum at an appropriate level and gradually. The remaining time (approximately 0.4 FTE) will consist of DOTT relief, teacher release for additional Professional Learning (PL) and other teaching duties as directed, according to the needs of the school.

The successful applicant will ideally have training and/or experience in a primary school setting, and be willing to engage in culturally responsive practices. Education support experience would also be beneficial, but not essential.

Key Features of the Role

* Support a student with complex needs, including comprehensive understanding of ASD, and Augmented and Alternative Communication (AAC) technology and methods.
* Work closely with classroom teachers on ways for the student to access curriculum and in‐class experiences.
* Consult with School of Special Education Needs: Disability (SSEN:D) and other specialists.
* Support the student in navigating school routines and procedures, including use of visual schedules and other prompts to support school‐based behaviours.
* Support the student in developing self‐regulation and independent functioning skills over time.
* Work closely with family and community in supporting the student.
* Liaise closely with school psychologist.
* Identify and plan for appropriate Special Education Needs (SEN) outcomes.
* Generate comprehensive documented plan for student(s) with complex needs.
* Liaise closely with principal for regular planning and monitoring sessions and collaborate closely with classroom staff.
* Engage in processes to update school strategic plan (aka business plan) to reflect disability‐focussed inclusive practices.

Please note the successful teacher must be prepared to live and work in a remote Aboriginal community with limited services (nearest town = Laverton – 32 km away on a recently sealed road).

The community is alcohol free. School staff must not consume alcohol or bring alcohol into their homes.
