Overview
PERSOL is partnering with a leading engineering organisation to recruit an experienced General Manager - Engineering (Technical) to lead and elevate the organisation's technical engineering capability.
This role is focused on technical leadership rather than project delivery. The successful candidate will set engineering standards across the business, strengthen technical governance, and lead multidisciplinary design capability across structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, and instrumentation disciplines.
You will act as the organisation's senior technical authority, ensuring high-quality engineering outputs across feasibility studies, concept design, FEED, detailed design, and specialist consulting services.
Working closely with the project delivery leadership team, you will ensure engineering excellence supports safe, efficient, and successful project outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
* Technical Leadership: Lead the organisation's technical engineering function across structural, mechanical, piping, electrical and instrumentation disciplines.
* Set and maintain engineering standards, governance frameworks, and technical quality systems.
* Provide senior oversight across feasibility studies, concept design, FEED, ECI, and detailed design activities.
* Act as the technical authority for engineering quality, constructability, maintainability, and compliance with relevant codes and standards.
Engineering Governance & Quality
* Establish and strengthen design assurance processes, technical reviews, and verification practices.
* Improve interdisciplinary coordination and technical risk management.
* Oversee engineering input into HAZOP, HAZID, Safety in Design, and plant optimisation studies.
* Ensure consistent, high-quality engineering documentation and design outputs.
Team Leadership & Capability Development
* Build, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of engineering managers, lead engineers, designers, and technical specialists.
* Strengthen engineering capability, succession planning, and technical training across the organisation.
* Promote a strong culture of technical excellence and continuous improvement.
Business & Client Engagement
* Support business development and proposals by providing technical credibility and solution development.
* Participate in client meetings, bid strategies, and methodology definition.
* Act as a senior client-facing technical leader, building trusted relationships with key stakeholders.
Strategic Engineering Development
* Drive continuous improvement across engineering systems, workflows, digital design tools, and documentation processes.
* Strengthen integration between engineering design and project delivery teams.
* Position the organisation as a high-quality engineering consulting and design partner.
Preferred Background
* Experience in a Chief Engineer, Engineering Manager, Technical Director, or General Manager - Engineering type role.
* Strong exposure to brownfield and greenfield projects within mining, industrial processing, energy, or infrastructure sectors.
* Deep understanding of engineering design, constructability, and operational considerations.
* Experience in technical consulting services such as design assurance, engineering audits, safety reviews, and optimisation studies.
* Familiarity with 2D drafting, 3D modelling, laser scanning, design data management, and multidisciplinary engineering interfaces.
