Assistant Director, Strategic Communications – EL1 Equivalent
Showcase your leadership and stakeholder skills in this 6-month contract leading strategic communications for an Independent Statutory Authority. An Independent Statutory Body is seeking a seasoned communications professional to lead strategic content and engagement initiatives. This EL1-level role requires robust leadership capability, a deep understanding of the government communications environment, and proven experience managing high-performing teams.
You’ll work collaboratively across the agency, with other government departments and external partners to deliver impactful, audience-focused communications. This is a 6-month labour hire contract, ideally based in Canberra or Adelaide, offering the opportunity to contribute to high-impact work in a purpose-driven organisation
About the Role
Reporting to the Director of Strategic Communications, you will lead the development and delivery of strategic communication campaigns and content that support priority projects and organisational objectives. You’ll be responsible for shaping clear, consistent, and engaging messaging across digital and traditional platforms, while identifying opportunities and risks in a dynamic policy environment.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading integrated planning and delivery of strategic communication initiatives
- Developing rich content and storytelling for priority pieces of work
- Creating and managing website content, newsletters, social media, and executive-level speeches
- Partnering with business areas and subject matter experts to deliver key project outcomes
- Managing the editorial calendar and ensuring alignment across communication channels
- Monitoring emerging trends and proactively managing communication-related risks
- Evaluating campaign effectiveness and implementing improvements
- Building and maintaining strong stakeholder relationships internally and externally
About You
You’re a confident leader and strategic thinker with excellent relationship management skills and a hands-on approach to content creation. You bring:
- Experience leading complex communications initiatives, ideally in a government context
- Exceptional writing and storytelling ability
- Strong stakeholder engagement and project management skills
- Ability to inspire and lead a high-performing team
- A collaborative mindset and ability to work across portfolios and agencies
- An interest or background in agriculture, water, or science is highly regarded
