Overview
DroneShield is seeking a Systems Engineer to join our product development team in Sydney. Reporting to the Quality Engineering Manager, this role offers the opportunity to contribute to the development of current and future generation products through effective requirements gathering, analysis, management and execution in collaboration with engineering development teams. The position is based at DroneShield's Sydney headquarters with a growing, high‑growth workplace that serves high profile customers across militaries, government agencies, airports, critical infrastructure, and law enforcement.
DroneShield operates at the intersection of Electronic Warfare, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, RF sensing, sensor fusion and distributed systems. The company is publicly listed in Australia and has raised significant funding to support its rapid expansion.
Responsibilities, Duties And Expectations
- Work with a team of systems engineers within the sensors & effectsors product development space to define and deliver quality products, features and capabilities for existing and next generation product lines.
- Support the development and introduction of systems engineering processes that promote best practices and provide a framework for product development, aiming to increase efficiency and improve project outcomes.
- Manage documentation for system design, requirements and test strategies, focusing on integration testing to ensure subsystems work together to meet overall system needs.
- Facilitate engagement between internal and external project stakeholders to ensure alignment, and communicate risks and technical information to senior management.
- Conduct engineering investigation and analysis to ensure continual improvement of products, taking ownership of bugs and technical issues and coordinating solutions with cross‑functional teams.
- Partner with Product and Project Management to support project deliverables and timelines by keeping development teams informed of key milestones and performance metrics.
- Work with a cross‑functional team of designers, developers and engineers to continuously improve the product by acting as the voice of the customer within the development teams.
- Contribute to the design of features to ensure they meet business and stakeholder requirements, using an understanding of DroneShield’s product offering and constraints.
Qualifications, Experience And Skills
- BS or Masters degree in relevant engineering discipline (Systems Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science), or similar technical field of study or equivalent practical experience.
- 2+ years of experience performing systems engineering responsibilities within complex product development environments.
- Sound understanding of the application of systems engineering frameworks, principles and tools across the entire product development lifecycle.
- Experience with requirements management for complex software and hardware products or features.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team environment on work packages and deliverables to achieve project outcomes.
- Experience developing and testing AI‑incorporated systems; experience with radio frequency (RF) hardware and software is desirable.
- Exposure to Electronic Warfare, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, RF sensing, Sensor Fusion and distributed systems is desirable.
- An understanding of cybersecurity practices in systems engineering to ensure the integrity and security of systems is desirable.
- Familiarity with the Atlassian ecosystem and project deliverables management using Jira or similar tools.
