About
Oscorp Energy is an Australian deep-tech startup building autonomous robotic systems for the waste and battery-recycling industry. Our machines detect, classify, and physically remove lithium-ion batteries and other hazardous items from waste streams using robotics, sensors, and AI.
We are early-stage, fast-moving, VC-backed and hands-on. This is not a large corporate environment — you will be close to the hardware, involved in decisions, and see your work deployed in real facilities.
Role
We are looking for a Mechatronics Engineer (3–5 years' experience) to help design, build, integrate, and deploy robotic sorting machines. You will work directly on systems that combine conveyors, robots, sensors, and end-effectors to physically sort objects from moving waste streams.
This is a hands-on startup role focused on turning sorting concepts into working machines on real sites.
Responsibilities
Robotic Sorting Machine Development
* Build and integrate complete sorting cells including conveyors, delta robots, end-effectors, frames, and safety systems
* Support machines that sort lithium-ion batteries, electronics, and other hazardous or valuable items from mixed waste
* Adapt mechanical designs to handle variable object sizes, shapes, orientations, and contamination
End-Effector & Pick Mechanism Design
* Select and integrate suction, compressed air, or mechanical picking mechanisms based on material type and throughput
* Test and iterate pick reliability on real waste streams
* Improve pick accuracy, speed, and recovery from failed picks
Sensor-to-Robot Integration
* Work with RGB vision, infrared, and other sensors to support object detection and localisation
* Assist with coordinate mapping between sensors and robots to enable accurate pick-and-place
* Support calibration and alignment of sensors relative to conveyors and robot workspaces
Controls, Automation & Hardware Integration
* Support PLC / IPC-controlled systems including I/O, safety interlocks, and sequencing
* Assist with motion system setup, robot tuning, and cycle-time optimisation
* Work with basic scripts or tools (e.g. Python) to support testing and diagnostics
Prototyping, Testing & On-Site Deployment
* Build and test prototypes and proof-of-concept sorting machines
* Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and automation issues during testing and live operation
* Support on-site commissioning at waste management and recycling facilities
Essential
* 3–5 years minimum experience in mechatronics, robotics, automation, or industrial machinery
* Degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, or similar
* Strong hands-on experience with mechanical systems, motors, actuators, conveyors, and sensors
* Comfortable working around industrial machinery and on active sites
* Able to read mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams, and system schematics
Highly Desirable
* Experience in waste management, recycling, materials handling, mining, or manufacturing
* Exposure to industrial sorting systems or pick-and-place robots
* Familiarity with PLC-based automation environments
* Practical experience commissioning or maintaining industrial equipment
Startup Mindset
* Comfortable working in a fast-moving startup with evolving requirements
* Willing to take ownership of systems from build to deployment
* Practical, safety-focused, and solutions-oriented
* Enjoys working on machines that must perform in messy, real-world conditions
What We Offer
* Direct involvement in building robotic sorting machines that operate in live waste facilities
* High ownership and visibility of your work
* Competitive salary + equity for the right candidate
* Opportunity to help shape how automated waste sorting systems are built and deployed
Why Oscorp Energy
If you want to build machines that physically sort real waste on real conveyor belts, and you enjoy solving hard mechanical and integration problems, Oscorp is the place to do it.
