Geoscience Australia is leading the development of a national positioning capability that enables government, business, and academia access to the positioning data and services required to solve important scientific challenges and drive innovation across a wide range of sectors.

As part of the team, you will be at the forefront of developing, operating, and advancing world-class positioning infrastructure across Australia, Antarctica, and the Pacific. This includes managing the Australian Regional GNSS Network (ARGN) and South Pacific Regional GNSS Network (SPRGN), which underpin national and international geodetic and positioning services. Our team fosters a positive culture focused on the open sharing of knowledge, continuous improvement, being solutions focused, innovating without fear, and fostering and maintaining strong partnerships with all stakeholders.

The role

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Team Leader to manage the GNSS Infrastructure Team within the Positioning Australia Branch at Geoscience Australia.

This EL1 role is responsible for leading the operation, maintenance, and strategic development of the Australian Regional GNSS Network (ARGN) and the South Pacific Regional GNSS Network (SPRGN). These networks are critical to delivering high-quality geodetic and positioning data that support national and international services.

The successful candidate will oversee a team of technical specialists, coordinate infrastructure planning and delivery, and ensure system performance meets operational and scientific requirements. The role also involves engaging with stakeholders across government, industry, and academia to support collaboration and continuous improvement.

In this role you will:

* Provide key operational and project management support in maintaining and enhancing our GNSS reference station networks across Australia, Antarctica, and the Pacific.
* Engage and collaborate with key stakeholders to respond to, and resolve technical issues promptly, maintaining service standards, including network availability and reliability.
* Lead projects to further develop, modernise, maintain and improve our GNSS reference station networks, effectively leveraging consultant, contractor, and partner support for design, implementation and review.
* Develop and implement an asset management strategy and forward plans, with focus on lifecycle management and maintaining optimal performance, longevity, and reliability, resilience and readiness.
* Demonstrate leadership in safety by adhering to and improving work practices, ensuring fieldwork and operations prioritise the well-being of technical teams and site personnel.
* Support field operations by building and delivering capacity, coordinating and managing contractors and other specialist service providers or resources where required, whilst ensuring WHS maturity.
* Prepare and provide advice, information, and support on GNSS infrastructure to a diverse range of stakeholders, including project partners, committees, and working groups.
* Work closely with the Director to monitor budgets and resources; ensue optimal resource allocation.
* Collaborate with the Director to develop and implement risk mitigation strategies; proactively address risk to minimise disruption and maintain operational stability.

To be successful in the role you will:

* Work under limited direction to establish clear project plans; continually review project performance and respond flexibly to changing demands whilst working towards successful delivery against agreed milestones; cope effectively in an environment characterised by change.
* Demonstrate strong technical leadership, analytical and problem-solving skills and work effectively to identify, prioritise, solve and communicate issues in a time-sensitive manner; you will leverage predictive modelling, data analytics and other tech tools to optimise infrastructure performance and resilience.
* Apply in-depth knowledge of asset lifecycle management principles and practices, balancing short-term objectives with long-term sustainability goals.
* Allocate time to actively support your team; foster a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous learning; encrouage them to take ownership of their responsibilities.
* Take personal responsibility for meeting objectives; invest your energy in ensuring performance measures are meet.
* Work collaboratively and operate as an effective team member; consult and share information within the team and seek input from others; consult other team members prior to making decisions that affect them; ensure people are kept informed of progress and issues.
* Build and sustain positive relationships with external stakeholders from diverse backgrounds and experiences; confidently present and tailor technical information in both written and oral form to a range of audiences.
* Support section management and actively contribute to and foster an inclusive culture within the team; Adhere to the APS Values and Code of Conduct and consistently behave in an honest, ethical, and professional manner.

Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications

The following skills and experience will be highly regarded:

* Technical knowledge of GNSS systems and infrastructure, including GNSS reference stations, data processing, and network operations.
* Understanding of how GNSS data and services are used across science and industry.
* Tertiary qualifications in engineering, geospatial science, or a related disiplince, or equivalent professional experience in a relivant technical field.
