The Prospect
DFAT is seeking an experienced Senior Medical Adviser to assist the Principal Medical Adviser in delivering high quality primary health care support for employees and dependants posted overseas. You will provide advice on complex case management and coordinate medical evacuations and health care for staff and dependants.
You will assist in the management and supervision of four posted Medical Officers attached to overseas missions in Dili, Honiara, Jakarta and Port Moresby.
You will gather information on disease activity and medical facilities abroad through regular travel, liaison with government departments in Australia and overseas, and with other relevant organisations.
The successful applicant will also assist in the formulation and implementation of health policies, ensuring that approved health care is in accordance with these policies and in the provision of regular reporting to the department's executive on the strategic direction and objectives of the department's Medical Unit.

Your duties and responsibilities will be aligned to the relevant APS Work Level Standards.
Your key duties will include:
- Delivering high level primary health care support for employees and dependants overseas, including in remote areas;
- Providing advice on complex case management in consultation with the Principal Medical Adviser, Staff Counselling Office, and relevant areas of the department's human resource branches;
- Assisting in the management of the department's Medical Unit, and supervision of four posted Medical Officers attached to overseas missions in Dili, Honiara, Jakarta and Port Moresby;
- Coordinating urgent and non-urgent medical evacuations and health care for staff and dependants;
- Managing medical clearances for employees and dependants prior to posting and providing advice to employees on health issues in the overseas context, including through presentations;
- Assisting the Principal Medical Adviser in the formulation and implementation of health policies, ensuring that approved health care is in accordance with these policies and providing regular reporting to the departmental executive on the strategic direction and objectives of the department's Medical Unit;
- Gathering information on disease activity and medical facilities overseas through regular travel, and liaison with other Australian Government departments and relevant organisations in Australia and overseas;
- Assisting the Principal Medical Adviser in the management of contracts for the supply of medical services to the department;
- Assisting the department's consular area with medical advice when required;
- Participating in the on-call roster (usually one week every three weeks);
- Locum coverage of clinics and providing primary and basic emergency medical care and treatment for the staff and families when performing locum (usually two weeks once a year)
