About The Business Unit

HM Prison Barwon is a maximum‐security prison located 6km north‐west of Lara, 20km from the centre of Geelong and about 70km from Melbourne. It is Victoria's major maximum‐security prison for sentenced male prisoners. The prison officially opened in January 1990 and currently houses up to 416 men in custody, including high security, long‐term management, specialist protection, and medium security prisoners.

About The Role

Prison Supervisors are responsible for the management of an area or the delivery of a specific function and may be required to be the officer in charge at the prison or courts. The role requires leadership, maturity, sound judgement and confidence in decision making, with developed capabilities to coach, mentor and motivate staff. With highly developed communication and negotiation and problem‐solving skills the prison supervisor leads and manages staff to achieve program and service outcomes in a multidisciplinary team and rehabilitative environment.

This multifaceted role encompasses human resource management, including performance management, coaching and developing staff, OH&S requirements, staff employment and training requirements and budget monitoring.

An important facet of the Prison Supervisor role involves liaison with internal staff and external stakeholders and preparation of analytical and informed contributions to develop and deliver programs and processes.

The Prison Supervisor will direct and supervise teams conducting searches and escorts, surveillance, observing and assessing prisoner behaviour, operating a variety of security equipment, collating information and preparing reports and management of critical incidents. Prison Supervisors have a significant role to play in ensuring compliance with prison and court procedures.

The Prison Supervisor plays an integral role in developing, implementing, reinforcing and reviewing practice and procedures relating to offender management and security management. They actively lead working parties and reference groups and provide advice through written reports to senior management.

The Prison Supervisor will identify operational and services delivery deficiencies and will develop and implement strategic solutions.

It is a requirement of this position to work weekends and public holidays, which will be remunerated in accordance with the applicable provision of the VPS Determination.

Some Of Your Duties Will Include

* Leading and managing staff to ensure the safety and security of prisoners, staff and visitors. This includes maintenance of the integrity of both the external and internal security of the facility, appropriate levels of surveillance and interaction within the facility, and monitoring staff for compliance with security and safety procedures.
* Train, supervise and support staff in all aspects of prison operations including prisoner assessment, case management, program and service knowledge and involvement, maintenance of professional boundaries and contribution to prison security management and classification procedures.
* Deliver performance management and professional development guidance to custodial staff, taking responsibility for supervision and development of allocated team staff.
* Participate as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team, providing a quality assurance role to ensure the effective management of operational areas, with key emphasis on the development, delivery and evaluation of offender management programmes and practices.
* Contribute to the effective operation of the prison through a developing knowledge of financial and human resource management requirements, including OH&S procedures and provide effective guidance on staffing matters, including the allocation of workload and team‐based responsibilities.

About You

* Demonstrated commitment to working with staff, prisoners and other service providers in the delivery of an integrated, whole of Justice approach to reducing re‐offending.
* Qualifications and/or demonstrated experience and skill in areas relevant to correctional delivery, offender management and/or offender treatment.

Qualifications / Requirements

* Applicants must have completed the Prison Officer pre‐training course or be willing to undertake the next available course.
