Payroll Accountant/Compliance Specialist

Project Overview
The Payroll Accountant/Compliance Specialist works within the BBS Financial Services Team in Brisbane, reporting to the Australian Country Controller. The role focuses on Australian payroll compliance, expatriate tax, and global payroll processes, supporting local and global teams to meet evolving statutory requirements.
Job Summary
As part of a dynamic team, you will identify and implement controls to enhance payroll accounting and compliance processes, ensuring accurate post‑pay run and month‑end payroll accounting, compliance with Australian employer obligations, and effective reporting to internal and external stakeholders.
This position is designated as part‑time telework, requiring at least three days of in‑person attendance per week at the assigned office. Weekly schedules will be defined in consultation with the supervisor.
Major Responsibilities
* Reconcile payroll data and accounts, manage post‑pay run and month‑end payroll accounting processes.
* Oversee employer‑related payments and ensure compliance with State/Territory payroll taxes and Super Guarantee payments.
* Identify and implement controls to enhance payroll accounting and compliance processes.
* Collaborate with Payroll, HR, and Controllers to maintain local payroll compliance.
* Participate in changes to local/international payroll instances, policies, or procedures.
* Oversee moderately complex payroll reports (e.g., annual payroll/wage reporting) and prepare supporting documents.
* Respond to inquiries from tax and payroll authorities.
* Manage post‑pay run costing of wages, journal entries, and annual reviews of on‑costs.
* Monitor payroll clearing accounts and work with the payroll team to ensure correct payment treatment.
* Analyze and reconcile complex payroll data and accounts for timely and accurate reporting.
* Monitor payroll compliance with legislation, conduct audits, and mitigate risks.
* Develop and implement payroll accounting and compliance procedures, work instructions, and process improvements.
* Provide support for payroll‑related reconciliations, audits, and reporting to internal and external teams.
Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) and 8–10 years of relevant experience, or 12–14 years of relevant work experience.
Required Knowledge and Skills
* Full understanding of payroll function with ability to resolve a wide range of issues.
* Strong analytical judgment in selecting methods and techniques for solutions.
* Ability to network and connect with senior internal and external personnel.
* Experience supervising support or junior staff.
* Support management decisions and activities.
* Prioritization skills to ensure task completion and coordination with supervisors.
* Demonstrated knowledge of end‑to‑end payroll.
* Experience with SAP and Oracle ERP systems is highly desirable.
