Offer description

Overview

This is a 12 month fixed term, full-time position commencing Term 2, 2026 with possible extension and/or permanency. The School of Alternative Learning Settings (SALS) – Northam is seeking to appoint a teacher for a fixed term position at the Northam site.

About SALS

The SALS program targets students with complex and challenging behaviour who benefit from a short-term, intensive intervention program. SALS delivers specialised activities and learning programs that build students' social skills and self-regulation in environments designed to effect positive and lasting change in behaviour. The program may provide access to specialists such as paediatricians, clinical psychologists, or psychiatrists. There are 13 SALS sites located in Western Australia, including SALS Administration in Padbury. Students receive an intensive, individualised program of support with a strong focus on social skills and self-regulation. Learning and engagement is flexible, co-designed with students, culturally responsive and supports self-determination and interpersonal connection.

The Role

The successful applicant would benefit from teaching positions that provide the opportunity to collaborate and contribute to developing the program, inform strategic direction, and establish new sites. We are looking for dedicated teachers who can work in a team, using strong communication skills to engage students and improve wellbeing and engagement. Skills in developing and implementing a social and emotional curriculum that meets student needs are valued; practical knowledge of the circle of courage is advantageous. Teachers will support individual learning plans utilising an integrated curriculum approach.

The SALS program provides teachers with the opportunity to be part of a multi-skilled, student-centric team built around an ecological framework of support.

The SALS sites are staffed by a Program Coordinator, a team of three teachers with support from a student support officer and a school psychologist. Successful applicants will ideally have experience in student engagement and transitions, case management, social and emotional learning program development, a background in student support and current professional learning, or the capacity to undertake targeted professional learning in areas such as de-escalation, team teaching, circle of courage, therapeutic crisis intervention in schools and trauma-informed practice.

Successful applicants may be required to hold and maintain a valid WA driver's licence. Teachers may transport students in lease or hire vehicles, and/or travel to schools within the Metropolitan Region. There may also be travel across the school to attend professional learning and support other sites.

All functions of Statewide Services support successful outcomes for all students through better integration of services with schools, families, and external service providers; supporting schools and networks of schools to deliver high quality teaching and learning in every classroom; and creating expanded opportunities for students to develop academic, personal, and social competencies for participation in the workforce and society of the future.
