Primary objective
To provide language services, cultural brokerage, education, advocacy and support to Aboriginal patients, families and staff
at Tennant Creek Hospital.
Context statement
The aboriginal liaison officer works to support the delivery of culturally appropriate and safe health care services to aboriginal
patients and their families.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being
undertaken in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
2. Provide cultural brokerage services for identified Aboriginal patients and their families and staff.
3. Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of patients accessing the Tennant Creek Hospital.
4. Provide advice to health service providers on cultural factors influencing patient engagement and decision making.
5. Participate in the training for hospital staff on communication and cross-cultural issues, management and decision
making, with staff, Aboriginal patients and families.
6. Attend team meetings, training activities and supervision, contribute ideas and work collectively on team projects, and
participate in all activities the team engages in.
7. Work within a multidisciplinary, culturally diverse team to ensure provision of a culturally appropriate service.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Experience working as a cultural broker or liaison between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people.
2. Good verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to communicate well with both Aboriginal and non-
Aboriginal people from diverse cultures within a workplace.
3. Understanding of cross-cultural issues that may impact on patients accessing the health service.
4. Ability to organise and prioritise own workload to ensure essential tasks are completed within designated time frames.
5. Capacity and willingness to work towards developing identified own learning needs and complete training.

1. Experience working in a health care setting

The preferred or recommended applicant will be required to hold a current working with children clearance notice and
undergo a criminal history check. A criminal history will not exclude an applicant from this position unless it is relevant to
the position. This role carries specific immunisation requirements. For immunisation requirements - Category A (direct
