Chairperson, Seacare Authority
Expressions of interest are sought from suitably qualified persons for consideration for appointment as the Chairperson of the Seafarers Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Authority (Seacare Authority).
The Seacare Authority is a non-corporate Commonwealth entity established under the Seafarers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1992 (Seafarers Act). It is a tripartite body that oversees the operation of the Seacare scheme, a workers' compensation and work health and safety scheme that covers a specified section of the Australian maritime industry. It is comprised of an independent Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson, 2 members representing employees, 2 members representing employers and the Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.
The Chairperson of the Seacare Authority leads the governance and strategic oversight to ensure the Authority fulfils its legislative functions under the Seafarers Act and the Occupational Health and Safety (Maritime Industry) Act 1993. The Chairperson is the accountable authority of the Seacare Authority for the purposes of the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013 and presides at all Seacare Authority meetings at which they are present.
To be a strong contender for the role you will have high-level judgement and leadership skills, demonstrated professional and personal integrity and a demonstrated ability to facilitate discussions with diverse stakeholder interests, bringing people together, building consensus and achieving outcomes.
You must be able to chair meetings of the Seacare Authority, including out of session meetings, and meetings with the Comcare secretariat on Seacare Authority matters.
Experience or qualifications relevant to the Seacare Authority's functions and the exercise of its powers would be highly desirable. These include legal and financial skills and experience and understanding of the maritime industry.
Basis of appointment:
This position is a part-time statutory appointment under the Seafarers Act for a fixed period of up to 5 years. The Chairperson is eligible for reappointment.
The appointment will be made by the Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations.
