About the role
SIMEC Mining Whyalla Operations currently conduct mining in the Middleback Ranges at Iron Baron and the South Middleback Ranges (SMR). This role is pivotal in ensuring the mining plan and targets are safely delivered by mining contractors. The role requires management of the contractors to ensure operating discipline, adherence to plan, and compliance with output and safety requirements.
We are currently seeking a Superintendent Mining to safely manage the mining operations, maximising efficiency in meeting agreed and planned volumes, quality, and delivering ore feed requirements to the processing plants.
In this position, you will closely collaborate with mining contractors, the Manager Mining, Manager Technical Services, Manager Fixed Plant, Manager Hematite Processing, Manager Port & Supply Chain Logistics, Magnetite Expansion Project teams, and various support functions to ensure safe, efficient, and successful operation of current and future states.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
1. Create and maintain a proactive Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) culture and sustainable environment
2. Coach and mentor mining teams to develop capability and ensure sustainable succession planning
3. Foster and support the relationship with the mining contractors
4. Establish short-term operational work plans for mining operations and use these as the basis for determining priorities
5. Develop operational objectives and KPIs for asset availability & utilization, production rates, and overall mining capacities and unit costs
6. Develop, implement, and continuously improve procedures and operating instructions required by the Management Operating System
7. Assist the Manager Mining in developing annual operating and capital budgets, monitor performance, and track against budget targets
8. Ensure the strength/effectiveness of leaders at all levels and sponsor development of future leaders
9. Be accountable for creating and maintaining an effective mining team to achieve plans and targets while improving performance

Qualifications and experience required:
1. Relevant tertiary qualifications in mining engineering, metallurgy, geology, or equivalent, supported by hands-on experience in similar roles
2. Strong understanding and compliance with Health, Safety, and Environment regulations and South Australian legislative requirements
3. Leadership experience in managing mining operations and change management capabilities
4. Understanding of mining methodologies and improvement processes
5. Experience with contract & contractor management or owner mining operations, with success in managing costs and performance of outsourced/insourced operations
6. Relevant qualifications and statutory tickets to qualify as Mine Manager/Quarry Manager
