What’s the role?
You report on political news stories and events in the United States including live reporting, newsgathering & written copy for the Sky News website. You translate the complex mechanisations of US politics for an Australian audience and interpret US reaction to global news stories and developments. You work to tight broadcast deadlines, following and updating story developments in real time. You pitch and deliver US-based content that is dynamic, engaging and relevant for the Sky News audience. You seek to build and foster relationships with US lawmakers, administration officials & notable US-based Australians.
Responsibilities
- Report and broadcast in both live and non‑live settings.
- Demonstrate excellent editorial understanding in pursuing & reporting strong stories.
- Produce, write and shoot original news packages and content relevant to US politics.
- Operate as a video journalist where required.
- Travel as needed across North America – including unplanned, short‑notice assignments for breaking news.
- Write and contribute to skynews.com.au.
- Work outside of standard business hours to broadcast content into Australian time zones.
- Regularly liaise with Sky’s editorial staff in Australia to discuss coverage.
Who are you?
- Minimum 5 years of reporting experience.
- Independence, confidence and resilience to operate independently in foreign countries and work autonomously.
- Deep understanding of US politics.
- Deep understanding of international news and current affairs.
- Ability to operate (or learn to operate) a video journalist kit.
- Ability to broadcast live and perform on camera.
- Flexibility to respond and react to breaking news.
- Outstanding news judgment.
- Excellent time management skills and ability to withstand pressure.
- Confident networking & connecting with relevant American & Australian officials.
- Understanding of the on‑call nature of a foreign correspondent role.
