The Team
The Command Centre and Protective Security section supports the AEC's operational resilience by delivering a coordinated, risk based protective security capability. The section is responsible for ensuring the AEC meets its protective security obligations and for providing authoritative advice to support sound decision making.
Key functions include security governance and policy implementation, personnel security and security clearances, incident reporting and investigation, physical and access security management, and the design and delivery of security awareness and training initiatives. The section works collaboratively across the organisation and with external partners to promote a positive security culture, manage security risks, and protect the AEC's people, assets and operations, underpinning public confidence in Australia's electoral system.

The Opportunity
The Security Officer role supports the delivery of protective security outcomes with a strong focus on personnel security and employment suitability. The position contributes to the assessment, management and monitoring of workforce integrity risks across the employment lifecycle, in line with the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF).
This position is Canberra-based and requires regular on-site attendance to meet operational and stakeholder engagement requirements. Flexible or remote working arrangements are limited. The successful candidate will be required to be based in Canberra for the duration of the role.
To Excel You'll Have
* Experience working in protective security, personnel security, employment suitability, workforce integrity, or a closely related function.
* Working knowledge of the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF), particularly personnel security requirements, or the ability to quickly develop this knowledge.
* Experience supporting pre-employment screening, suitability checks or vetting processes, including handling and reviewing sensitive personal information.
* Ability to identify basic personnel security or integrity risks and elevate matters appropriately in line with procedures and guidance.
* Strong attention to detail and ability to produce clear, accurate documentation, records and recommendations.
* Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive or protected information with discretion and professionalism, while working within established policies and procedures while exercising sound judgement.
* Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work constructively with HR, security and business stakeholders.
Desirable
* Experience supporting ongoing suitability, workforce monitoring and integrity review activities.
* Exposure to insider risk, integrity or misconduct matters within a government or regulated environment.
* Experience liaising with central vetting agencies or supporting clearance sponsorship and management processes.
* Experience maintaining registers, tracking tools or case management systems related to personnel security or suitability.
* Understanding of how personnel security interacts with fraud, misconduct, cyber or broader protective security functions.
* Experience contributing to process improvement, guidance or procedural updates in a security or integrity context.
