Job Overview
Biomedical Scientists (Specialist) are responsible for analysing samples to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of disease processes and drug therapy by applying automated, semi-automated, and manual analytical techniques.
Diagnostic tests include examination of blood, cerebrospinal fluid, serum, plasma, urine, faeces, other biological fluids, and renal and other stones.
Main Duties of the Job
Lead a team of Specialist Biomedical Scientists, Medical Laboratory Assistants, and support workers within a laboratory section to deliver efficient patient care and resource management.
Organise and maintain workflow, provide teaching and development for staff, and uphold high technical and scientific standards.
Participate in laboratory clinical governance management meetings and act as the first point of contact for staff performance and competency issues.
Manage staffing matters, including annual leave approval, staff sickness, recruitment, selection, induction, and personal development reviews.
Ensure adherence to Trust policies, health and safety, training, stock ordering, rota planning, and quality procedures.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
Perform manual, semi-automated, and fully automated laboratory investigations.
Experience of 24/7 shift work in a Chemistry Laboratory.
Managed a team and section, supporting troubleshooting of staff and equipment.
Manage staff using HR policies and develop competency frameworks.
Desirable Criteria
Knowledge of additional responsibilities such as health & safety, stock management, and training.
Understanding of management and HR policies in a laboratory setting.
Experience with shift work and troubleshooting beyond basic requirements.
