Primary objective
The Work Health and Safety Consultant is responsible for providing leadership, advice and support to managers and staff
across Primary Health Care (PHC) to facilitate compliance of Work Health and Safety (WHS) legislative requirements through
implementation of a structured, formalised WHS Management System.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. In partnership with key stakeholders, implement measures and strategies designed to equip employees to manage WHS
in accordance with WHS legislation and organisational direction.
2. Monitor, analyse and report on WHS performance outcomes, identify trends, advise and make recommendations to
executive and senior management to improve safety performance and reduce risk.
3. Work with Managers to develop a safety culture that embeds safety as part of everyday business across PPHC and
promote use of NT Health’s Incident Reporting and Management System “Riskman”.
4. Develop, implement, coordinate and deliver WHS education and training programs, across various locations that align
with PPHC priorities for improving WHS performance.
5. Follow defined service quality standards, WHS policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in order
to ensure high quality, safe services, and workplaces.
6. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary practices and role modelling behaviour.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Previous experience facilitating WHS legislation compliance together with a sound understanding and knowledge of
current WHS best practice as well as the Australian WHS Standards.
2. Highly developed knowledge of contemporary and effective health and safety systems.
3. Well- developed research, analytical and organisational skills with proven ability to work independently within a team
and to take responsibility for achieving outcomes.
4. Proven ability to drive and implement strategic change to achieve continuous WHS improvement, and ability to build
positive and effective working partnerships at all levels across the organisation and with other stakeholders.
5. A strong customer focus with well-developed conflict, mediation, alternate dispute resolution skills in addition to an
ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures.
6. Previous experience in risk analysis, conducting audits, inspections and providing expert advice pertaining to WHS issues.
7. An ability to travel to remote and/or regional areas.
Desirable
1. Tertiary WHS qualifications.
2. Certificate IV Training and Assessment or related qualification in adult education.
