Senior Prosecutor, appealsFull-time Temporary with a Possibility of PermanencyDetails: The ACT Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions was established by the Director of Public Prosecutions Act 1990 (the Act) to institute, conduct and supervise prosecutions and related proceedings. It comprises the Director of Public Prosecutions (the Director), an independent statutory officer appointed by the ACT’s Executive branch of Government, and staff employed under the Public Sector Management Act 1994, to assist the Director.The principal role of the ODPP is to determine whether or not to continue or initiate the prosecution of matters referred by the Australian Federal Police and Australian Capital Territory regulatory agencies and, if it decides to do so, to fairly conduct the prosecutions and any appeals or related proceedings which may arise.The Office maintains a strong adherence to the values of the ACT Public Service Code of Conduct.The appeals team is responsible for reviewing legal decisions, identifies potential errors and prepares arguments to challenge rulings in the higher court. The appeals team generally seek a reversal or modification to an original decision made by a court, or uphold a decision appealed by defence.This position is a mix of research and advocacy. The role will require the successful applicant to routinely review appeal recommendations, prepare and draft appeal documents and instruct in appeals in the ACT Supreme Court or superior appellate courts.The position will appeal to a person who has proven well developed legal research skills and appellate work experience. Someone who can effectively and proficiently communicate with the court, complainants, witnesses, professional colleagues and the police. Good attention to detail, legal analytical skills and time management is essential.This position will expose you to graphic and confronting material.This position requires the successful candidate/s to work within the office five (5) days per week.
