About us

Durri Aboriginal Corporation Medical Service (ACMS) is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Primary Health Service. For over 40 years, Durri ACMS has provided essential and culturally appropriate health care to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people located in Kempsey, Nambucca Heads, and surrounding communities.

Our primary health service site in Kempsey is located on the traditional lands of the Dunghutti people, extending from the eastern extremity of the Mid North Coast to the Northern Tablelands.

Our Nambucca clinic sits in the homeland of the Gumbaynggirr people, with the Nambucca Valley being the southern gateway to subtropical Australia.

Durri services range across a number of both clinical and non-clinical services. From primary health care, chronic disease, dental, women's health, perinatal to postnatal services as well as programs ranging from social emotional wellbeing services being built within an all-encompassing health setting means a comprehensive health approach can be undertaken.

Durri ACMS acknowledges the impact of past trauma, dispossession, separation of families, child removal, ongoing social disadvantage, racism and other historical, political, social and cultural issues that impact on the social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and their communities.

About the role

This position plays a vital role in supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members across the cancer care continuum, from prevention and early diagnosis to treatment and survivorship. The role focuses on delivering culturally safe, person-centred care coordination, fostering partnerships with health services, and improving access to screening, treatment, and holistic supports.

The key objectives of the role include providing.

Provide culturally safe care coordination, navigation, and advocacy for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients across the cancer care continuum.

Promote early detection through screening engagement and health education in conjunction with the health Promotions cancer Care worker.

Assist clients and families in understanding diagnosis, treatment options, and follow-up care.

Help overcome barriers to care, including transport, communication, and service navigation.

Selection Criteria

Essential:

1. Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent (This is an identified position under Section 14D of the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 1977).

2. Describe your experience working in a cancer care setting or your lived experience of cancer (personal, family or community), and how you have drawn on this to support others. Explain your understanding of the emotional demands of this role, and how you maintain resilience, empathy, and self-care when supporting individuals and families through challenging circumstances.

3. Relevant qualifications and/or experience in health, community services, or a related field.

4. Demonstrated experience working respectfully and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

5. Strong understanding of cancer prevention, screening, treatment, and supportive care principles.

6. Ability to develop practical tools, training resources, and personalised care plans.

7. Excellent interpersonal, advocacy, and relationship-building skills with clients, families, and health professionals.

8. Knowledge of local Aboriginal health services and referral pathways.

9. Willingness to travel for client support, community engagement, or professional development as required.

1. Strong organisational and time management skills, including accurate and confidential record keeping.

2. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, with a commitment to continuous improvement.

3. Ability to use Microsoft products and the ability to use or willingness to gain proficiency in the Communicare patient information management system.

4. Current First Aid Certificate, or ability to obtain.

5. Current immunisations or willingness to participate in staff immunisation program including COVID-19 vaccinations.

6. Ability to hold all relevant security clearances including National Police Check and Working with Children clearance.

7. Current valid driver's license, minimum of Class "C" or equivalent.

Desirable

1. Certificate III or IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, Health Navigation, or related health/community services qualification—or willingness to obtain.

2. Experience working in cancer care, community health, chronic disease management, or within an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (ACCHO).

3. Knowledge of national cancer screening programs (e.g. breast, bowel, cervical), local referral pathways, and psychosocial support services for clients and families.
