About the role

You will provide specialist palliative medicine support and education to clinicians across multiple disciplines to achieve quality, safe and well governed specialist palliative care. You will have a commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research and supervision and participate in quality activities, professional development, and continuing education. Applicants should be familiar with the five phases of palliative care and be well versed in best evidence approach to managing patients across the spectrum of palliative care presentations. You may be eligible for a conjoint appointment with the University of Newcastle at an academic level commensurate with the applicant's qualifications and experience.


About our Department

* 1 x FTE Palliative Care Specialist (available throughout the week Mon-Fri)
* Specialist led inpatient consult liaison service in Manning Base Hospital including CNC2, CNS & Registrar
* Community palliative care nursing led service providing support to the region including Manning Valley, Great Lakes, Gloucester, & Bulahdelah
* Medical governance of Forster Private Hospital palliative care consult liaison service
* Outpatient clinic potential
* Strong links with the district wide Health Service and support networks statewide
* Accreditation for Advanced Skilled Post (ACCRM / RACGP) and Diploma of Palliative Care (RACP)
* We have a well-established relationship with the University of Newcastle's Department of Rural Health and teach into Year 3-5 of the Joint Medical Program. Appointment as a conjoint academic is encouraged (level commensurate with qualifications and experience)

We have undergone significant redevelopment following a $140 million investment with a further $100 million recently allocated to further expansion. We have 180 beds with all the specialities you would expect of a Rural / Regional Hospital, providing you with a diverse mix of elective and emergency cases with support from our tertiary centre (John Hunter Hospital). We serve the local coastal and inland communities of Taree, Forster, Tuncurry, Old Bar, Gloucester, Manning Point and surrounding district, approximately 100,000 people over 3,732 km2.


Qualifications

* A primary medical degree registrable with AHPRA and Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Physicians or Australasian Chapter of Palliative Medicine (FAChPM) or nearing completion within the next 6 months
* Evidence of being a medical expert, demonstrated by recent and comprehensive experience in specialist-led Palliative Medicine
* Evidence of being a scholar, maintaining medical professional development and having the ability to assist other staff, including trainees, in the acquisition and development of knowledge
* Evidence of being a skilled communicator, including both oral and written skills, communicating with patients, students, other health professionals and the public
* Evidence of being a collaborator, including the ability to network and operate within an interdisciplinary framework and to work with other stakeholders in a variety of settings
* Evidence of being a manager, including ability to be flexible and cope with a changing health system, past leadership and management experience and previous safety and quality improvement activities
* Evidence of being a professional, including continued professional development, peer review and other forms of clinical governance
* Evidence of being an advocate, including contributions to improving individual and societal health
