We’re now looking for a technically strong IT professional ready to take their first steps into leadership.
About the Role
This role is ideal for someone who is technically strong, highly organised (critical), and ready to grow into leadership. Formal leadership experience is not required, but demonstrated leadership capability is essential.
You’ll act as 2IC to the Head of IT Infrastructure & Cybersecurity, combining hands-on technical work with team coordination, mentoring, and operational ownership.
This is a fully onsite role based at VAE’s Darra HQ, with onsite parking and modern IT equipment.
What You’ll Be Doing
Leadership & Operations
* Act as 2IC to the Head of IT Infrastructure & Cybersecurity
* Provide leadership coverage and ensure continuity when required
* Lead and support a small team of 2 skilled engineers
* Coordinate daily IT operations, task flow, and priorities
* Act as an escalation point for complex technical issues
* Mentor team members and support their development
* Lead by example with strong organisation, structure, and attention to detail
* Build and maintain high-quality documentation, SOPs, standards, and processes
Projects & Technology Uplift
You’ll contribute to and help deliver initiatives including:
* Identity and access improvements aligned to Zero Trust principles
* Endpoint security, application control, and hardening initiatives
* Network segmentation and access control enhancements
* Infrastructure improvements across servers, storage, and cloud workloads
* Backup, disaster recovery, and monitoring uplift
* SaaS governance and automation improvements
* Data governance initiatives
* New office and site deployments across AU & NZ
Cybersecurity Support
* Support improvements to identity, access, and authentication controls
* Assist with vulnerability remediation and internal testing
* Maintain and enforce secure configuration baselines
* Review logs, alerts, and system behaviour alongside the Cyber Engineer
* Align work with ISO 27001, NIST CSF, and Essential Eight principles
About You
This role suits someone early in their leadership journey with strong technical foundations.
You:
* Have 7+ years’ experience across infrastructure, systems, networking, or cybersecurity
* May not have held a formal leadership title yet, but are ready for the next step
* Have experience in an MSP environment, or exposure to multiple and varied IT environments (highly regarded)
* Learn quickly, think clearly, and adapt well
* Thrive on projects and problem-solving
* Have exceptional organisational skills and attention to detail (non-negotiable)
* Understand urgency, prioritisation, and business impact
* Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
* Enjoy improving systems, strengthening processes, and creating structure
* Understand modern cyber expectations and governance standards
* Want to work in a professional, security-led IT environment
This is a hands-on role. You’ll still be solving problems, closing and allocating tickets, and contributing directly, while maintaining IT’s 5-star support reputation.
