The Role
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to Defence's Joint Force C4 Foundation Design activities, helping shape the future of Defence communications, networking and information exchange capabilities across the Integrated Force and coalition environments.
Working within the Foundational Design team, you will support the development of Joint Force Command, Control, Communications and Computing (C4) architectures for the 2029–2033 operating environment. Your focus will be on designing and developing systems-of-systems (SoS) solutions across wide area networking, routing, transport technologies, satellite communications (SATCOM), radio frequency (RF) systems and military communications bearers.
You will collaborate with Defence stakeholders across Groups and Services to develop force integration artefacts, architecture products and technical design guidance that support future mission capabilities including Multi‐Domain Strike, Integrated Air and Missile Defence, Electromagnetic Manoeuvre Warfare and Undersea Warfare.
Key Responsibilities Include
* Developing and maintaining foundational C4 design guidance to improve information exchange and technical interoperability across the Joint Force.
* Contributing to systems engineering and mission engineering activities using structured methodologies and Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE).
* Creating architecture views, digital models and visualisations that support "As-Is" and "To-Be" Defence communications architectures.
* Supporting Defence committees, capability gate reviews, investment boards and governance forums through the preparation of technical briefs, submissions and recommendations.
* Collaborating with standards and architecture teams to formalise design guidance and technical standards.
* Supporting major Defence programs and projects in applying foundational design principles and architectural guidance.
* Identifying opportunities to improve processes, tools and repositories used to manage C4 design knowledge and artefacts.
This Canberra-based position offers the opportunity to influence future Defence capability while working with some of Australia's leading communications, networking and systems engineering professionals.
About You
You are an experienced ICT, communications, networking or systems engineering professional with a strong understanding of Defence communications architectures and network technologies.
You possess practical experience across wide area networking, routing, transport technologies and military communications systems, with a sound understanding of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model, particularly the transport through physical layers. Exposure to SATCOM, RF communications technologies and military network architectures will be highly regarded.
You Will Ideally Bring
* Demonstrated experience with WAN technologies, routing protocols, network transport systems and communications bearer technologies.
* Understanding of ICT architecture frameworks such as DoDAF, NATO Architecture Framework, enterprise architecture or solution architecture methodologies.
* Experience developing architecture artefacts, technical designs, engineering documentation and visualisations.
* Knowledge of systems engineering principles and an appreciation of mission engineering approaches.
* Strong stakeholder engagement and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across Defence Groups, Services and project teams.
* The ability to communicate complex technical concepts through clear written documentation, briefings and presentations.
