Research Associate / Senior Research Associate in Consumer Energy Resources (x2 positions) at UNSW Adelaide, South Australia, Australia.
Responsibilities
* Contribute to one or more projects using energy systems data analysis and modelling and the development of open-source tools (e.g. Python, R, Matlab, or Excel) to support the energy transition of Consumer Energy Resources (CER).
* Handle and analyse large real-world datasets from CER such as rooftop PV, batteries, and electric vehicles (EVs).
* Query and manipulate large real-world datasets from different databases and platforms (AWS, SQL, Azure).
* Create new algorithms to analyse compliance of CER with relevant Australian standards (AS .2, CSIP-AUS, IEEE).
* Create new algorithms to analyse curtailment of CER under relevant standards and the Emergency Backstop Mechanism (EBM).
* Develop open-source tools to assist DNSPs and network operators with CER operations planning and management.
* Create data visualisations to understand the value of CER and to explore challenges with increasing CER penetration in distribution networks and at the system level.
* Engage with industry partners through regular meetings, presentations, and industry reports.
Position Details
* This position is available as either a Research Associate (Level A) or a Senior Research Associate (Level B); appointment level will depend on qualifications and experience.
* Salary:
* Level A, Research Associate — AUD $113,911 to $121,838 per annum + 17% superannuation
* Level B, Senior Research Associate — AUD $127,947 to $150,830 per annum + 17% superannuation
* Full time
* Fixed-term contract – Until December 2027
* Location: Kensington – Sydney, Australia

Skills & Experience

Level A
* A PhD or equivalent research experience in a related discipline, and/or relevant work experience.
* Experience in technical and economic modelling of renewable generation or distributed energy resources, including energy storage and demand-side participation, and aspects of energy user behaviour, distribution network implications, and integration into electricity system operation or planning.
* Expertise in analysis and modelling using large energy-related datasets, including formal statistical analysis and the use of AI techniques (pattern recognition, machine learning).
* Experience or interest in developing open-source modelling tools for broader stakeholder use in electricity industry analysis.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently and drive project tasks, with pro-active attitude and openness to innovation opportunities.
* Demonstrated ability to communicate with industry, electricity networks, market institutions, and distributed energy businesses in Australia.
* Strong track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity.
* Ability to work in a team and build effective cross-disciplinary relationships.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a diverse range of stakeholders and students.
Level B
* All Level A requirements, plus:
* Demonstrated capability in research leadership, high-quality research outcomes with impact, and open-source code practices.
* Experience building networks with profession and industry and pursuing funding or industry collaborations.
* High-level communication and networking skills; ability to engage diverse audiences.
