Satellite Scientist

Broadband 3 (Research Scientist)

Position Overview

The Research Program delivers world-class research aligned with the Bureau Strategy and R&D Plan enabling the Bureau to deliver better weather, water, climate, oceans and earth system predictions information and insights and innovations.

This position is in the Satellite Science team within the Research Program, where the occupant will be a member of a team of satellite scientists and software developers. The Satellite Science team's primary work is to extract valuable information from satellite observations, to enhance the decision-making processes of our customers.

Specifically, this position involves working as a team member to deliver enhanced products for Aviation customers. The position will primarily involve developing nowcasts (short-term forecasts) of convective cloud and working with scientists to develop satellite/observation augmented approaches to identifying turbulence and icing. The new products will support Aviation forecasters and customers. The candidate will work closely within a project team comprising aviation forecasters, satellite, verification and data scientists to developed accurate, automated and scenario-based aviation forecasting services.

The successful applicant should have demonstrated knowledge or experience in one or more of the following areas:

* Retrieval and/or verification of cloud, turbulence or icing properties from optical and infrared satellite observations or other observational data e.g. radar
* The capability to develop and verify techniques to perform the short-term forecasting of clouds, convection, turbulence and icing from satellite observations.
* The skills to apply machine learning approaches for short-term forecasts of multi-dimensional data sets and verify the results.

You will be expected to have teamwork and leadership skills appropriate to the EL1 level in the Australian Government Public Service's Integrated Leadership System.
