Belmont Hospital is a facility within Hunter New England Local Health District, providing high‑quality, patient‑centred care to the Lake Macquarie community. The Palliative Care Service delivers specialist care to patients with life‑limiting illness across the inpatient setting and liaises closely with community services.

The multidisciplinary team works closely with patients, families, and carers to promote comfort, dignity, and quality of life, and collaborates with acute services, general practitioners, and community providers across the district. Belmont Hospital offers a supportive, collaborative work environment in a peaceful location close to Lake Macquarie and Newcastle.

About Our Role

The Nurse Practitioner – Palliative Care provides advanced, autonomous clinical care to patients with life‑limiting illness across inpatient and community settings. The role focuses on comprehensive assessment, clinical management, symptom control, care coordination, and advance care planning in partnership with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team.

Key responsibilities include conducting advanced clinical assessments, prescribing and managing medications, ordering and interpreting diagnostics, and developing and evaluating palliative care plans. The Nurse Practitioner provides expert clinical advice, leads case conferences, supports complex decision‑making, and contributes to quality improvement, service development, and evidence‑based practice.

The role provides clinical leadership, education, and support to nursing and multidisciplinary staff but does not usually have direct line management responsibilities. The position works collaboratively with medical officers, allied health, general practitioners, and community services to ensure seamless, patient‑centred care. The Nurse Practitioner reports operationally to the to the Director of Nursing.

The Nurse Practitioner – Palliative Care will be supported by a collaborative multidisciplinary team, senior clinicians, and nursing leadership within Hunter New England Local Health District. A structured orientation and onboarding plan is provided on commencement, tailored to the role and local service model.

Ongoing support includes access to clinical supervision, peer Nurse Practitioner networks, mentoring, and professional development opportunities. The service supports continuing education, reflective practice, and involvement in quality improvement and service development activities.
