Salary: AUD 77,000 – AUD 80,000 + Super

Fox & Bow is a well-established and popular café operating in Red Hill and Farrer, Canberra. We are known for our quality food, welcoming atmosphere, and strong team culture. Due to continued growth, we are seeking an experienced Cook or Chef to join our busy kitchen team.

About the Role

This is a full-time position suited to a motivated and skilled Cook or Chef who thrives in a fast-paced café environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong kitchen skills, attention to detail, and a genuine passion for food quality and presentation.

Cook Responsibilities:

● Examine and select foodstuffs to ensure freshness and quality before preparation.

● Prepare and cook a variety of dishes following established recipes and menu plans.

● Season and adjust food during cooking to meet taste and quality expectations.

● Regulate temperatures of ovens, grills, fryers, and other kitchen equipment to ensure optimal cooking conditions.

● Portion food accurately, plate meals with garnishes, sauces, and accompaniments to maintain visual appeal.

● Store food appropriately in temperature-controlled facilities to maintain safety and freshness.

● Assist in planning menus and estimating food supply requirements.

Chef Responsibilities:

* Work with management to plan menus that suit customer tastes, seasonal ingredients, dietary needs, and budget/cost targets.
* Prepare and cook a range of dishes (starters, mains, desserts, and specials) by following recipes and kitchen standards.
* Show kitchen staff the right cooking methods and guide them so food is made consistently and to a good quality.
* Supervise, train, and organise kitchen staff such as cooks and kitchen hands during service and prep.
* Make sure all food is cooked and plated to a high standard, with consistent taste, presentation, and portion size.
* Keep track of stock, place orders when needed, and manage supplies to reduce waste and control costs.
* Follow food safety, hygiene, and workplace health and safety rules at all times.
* Check the quality of ingredients and finished dishes to ensure they meet business and legal standards.
* Maintain a clean and well-organised kitchen, including equipment, benches, and storage areas.
* Help with budgeting, costing recipes, and setting menu prices when required.

Skills and Qualifications:

● Relevant Certificate III or above in Commercial Cookery (or equivalent qualification).

● Minimum 1-2 years of experience in a similar cook/Chef or kitchen role preferred.

● Strong understanding of food safety, hygiene practices, and kitchen operations.

● Ability to work efficiently under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

● Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
