Senior Resident Medical Officer
Senior Resident Medical Officers (SRMOs) play a pivotal role in the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD), delivering high quality clinical care throughout the Greater Newcastle Area. The SRMO works closely with a multidisciplinary team of specialists, fellows, registrars and residents, gaining broad experience across a range of acute medical services and contributing to both patient care and professional education.
Where you'll be working
The role will be based in the following hospitals within the network:
* Maitland Hospital : Opened in January 2022, this modern facility provides maternity, gynaecology, paediatrics, oncology, intensive care, emergency and rehabilitation services to the surrounding Hunter Valley community.
* Belmont District Hospital : Offers emergency, medical, surgical, sub‑acute and pediatric care, including cardiac care and operating theatres.
* John Hunter Hospital (General Medicine, Sub‑speciality, Emergency, ICU and Children's): As a major teaching hospital and tertiary referral centre, it serves the northern NSW region with a broad spectrum of acute and specialty services.

What you'll be doing
The SRMO role provides extensive hands‑on experience in a broad range of specialities with solid senior medical leadership and support. Roles are multi‑disciplinary, team‑based and offer opportunities for education and to build pathways into specialty training for the Australian College of Emergency Medicine, Royal Australasian College of Physicians, Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and others.
Applicants with provisional or limited medical board registration are required to have Level 2 supervision.
Various start date options are offered for the 2026 clinical year.
Qualifications
* MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
* Minimum 2 years post‑graduate experience which includes 12 months experience working as a medical officer in an Australian public hospital or equivalent.
* Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within multi‑disciplinary teams, including the sharing of appropriate information internally and externally with key persons or services.
* Demonstrated verbal, written and interpersonal skills, with the capacity to modify communication style to suit audience.
* Evidence of commitment to self‑education and continued professional development with experience in teaching.
* Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
* Ability to work at the facilities within the Network (Greater Newcastle Area) to deliver patient care and preparedness and ability to participate in a 24‑hr shift work roster.
