This role offers an opportunity to deliver expert ophthalmic services within a supportive, multidisciplinary environment while contributing to improved eye health outcomes for communities across the district.

Primary Purpose
The VMO Ophthalmologist will provide senior clinical leadership and specialist ophthalmic services within the Department of Ophthalmology at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital. The role includes:

* Delivering specialist ophthalmic assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care.
* Contributing to safe, effective, evidence-based clinical practice aligned with MLHD values.
* Providing expert advice on service delivery, planning, and medical governance.
* Supporting clinical governance to ensure safe, high-quality services across MLHD.
* Participation in the on‑call roster. Required to participate in a 1‑in‑4 on‑call rotation, including weekend coverage.
* Clinical teaching and supervision. Expected involvement in registrar teaching and supervision in clinics (average of two clinics per week) and active participation in operating theatre sessions.
* Equitable contribution. All ophthalmologists are expected to undertake a proportionate and equitable share of public hospital operating lists, registrar clinics, and associated supervision responsibilities.

Key Accountabilities
Clinical Responsibilities

* Provide high quality ophthalmic services, including diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
* Supervise junior medical staff to ensure safe practice and accurate documentation.
* Monitor clinical indicators and outcomes, benchmarking against best practice.

Training, Mentoring & Supervision

* Supervise and support JMOs, Fellows, and trainees in line with accreditation requirements.
* Contribute to registrar training and assist in maintaining RANZCO accreditation.
* Participate in education programs for trainees.
* Contribute to clinical meetings, teaching activities, and Grand Rounds.

Clinical Quality, Safety & Audit

* Participate in quality improvement, risk management, M&M meetings, and audit activities.
* Monitor service delivery to ensure compliance with role delineation and regulatory standards.

Following orientation, VMOs are expected to supervise other doctors and medical students (excluding conditionally registered overseas trained doctors).

Selection Criteria

* Registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a Specialist Ophthalmologist, with Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists (RANZCO).
* Demonstrated technical and professional competence as a Consultant Ophthalmologist, with recent clinical hospital experience (within the last two years).
* Demonstrated participation in, and commitment to, Ophthalmology specific quality assurance activities.
* Demonstrated experience in clinical roles within a multidisciplinary healthcare environment.
* Proven ability to work effectively and harmoniously within multidisciplinary teams.
* Demonstrated commitment to the NSW Health CORE values and MLHD values, goals, and strategic priorities.

Other Requirements

* Comply with MLHD and NSW Health policies, delegations, procedures, and the NSW Health Code of Conduct.
* Complete mandatory training as required.
* Participate in annual performance review.
* Perform duties consistent with award classification and operational needs.
