The Role
We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Director – Mental Health Programs -Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drugs to lead a small national team dedicated on enhancing the mental health and wellbeing of Defence personnel.
The role translates complex research into practical, evidence-based health promotion, prevention and early intervention initiatives, training and programs that address alcohol, tobacco, and other drug-related, with consideration of co-morbid mental health conditions.
The role oversees all aspects of the portfolio including acting as a Subject Matter Expert, and providing advice and guidance to stakeholders across the enterprise. You also oversee the implementation and evaluation of initiatives including the Defence Alcohol Framework.
The preferred location of the role is Campbell Park, Canberra however flexible work arrangements may be considered for the successful candidate.
About our Team
The Mental Health and Wellbeing Branch is the lead for Workforce Mental Health policy and programs and enables the assured and continuous improvement of Mental Health and Wellbeing across the Defence enterprise.
The Branch comprised of military members and civilian employees, forms an inter-disciplinary team focused on improving the mental health and wellbeing of the Defence community, The Mental Health and Initiatives Directorate provides leadership in program development and implementation of evidence-informed programs that promote mental health and overall wellbeing.
These initiatives empower Defence personnel to live well and serve well. Through proactive education, early intervention, and population-based health promotion initiatives, the team aim to foster resilience, enhance mental fitness and build a supportive, informed and mentally health Defence community.
Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a strategic leader with advanced expertise in the Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs (AToD) sector, complemented by strong knowledge of the stepped-care approach, mental health, wellbeing, and co-morbid conditions. You demonstrate a proven ability to translate complex research into practical, evidence-based frameworks, policies, and population-level initiatives.
You are skilled in program development and evaluation, bringing experience in design and implementation of prevention and early intervention initiatives tailored to complex national contexts.
Exceptional decision-making and stakeholder management skills enable you to navigate competing priorities effectively. Outstanding communication and engagement capabilities support you in your role as a trusted AToD Subject Matter Expert for the Enterprise.
