About Alkane

Costerfield Operations, owned and operated by Alkane Resources Ltd, is situated in Central Victoria, east of Bendigo and surrounded by numerous towns within a 50km radius, offering a variety of residential options.

Our current operation runs an underground mine and processing plant that is responsible for producing gold and antimony. The mine's workforce consists of over 250 permanent employees who hold various roles in professional, technical, mining, processing, and trades.

Requirements

About The Role

Reporting to the Health, Safety, Environment and Community (HSEC) Manager, this role provides senior leadership and strategic oversight of the safety function across all sites, ensuring the effective delivery of safe, compliant and sustainable operations. As well as the leadership of a multidisciplinary team of trainers.

The role is accountable for ensuring workplace health and safety obligations are managed in a mature, risk-based manner, underpinned by strong governance, critical risk management, and assurance processes. It leads and manages the safety capability across the business, including direct responsibility for the training team ensuring effective development, delivery and maintenance of safety critical training inductions and competency frameworks.

The role works in close partnership with senior operational leaders to embed safety and competence expectations into operational planning and execution, influence workplace behaviours, and drive continuous improvement in safety performance, culture and capability in line with legislative, regulatory and organisational requirements.

The key responsibilities of the role include:

* Provide leadership for the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of the Mine Safety Management System (MSMS), ensuring it remains effective, compliant and fit for purpose.
* Lead and support hazard identification, risk assessments, and control processes, including the development, implementation and ongoing maintenance of Principal Hazard Management Plans.
* Establish and maintain a structured program of workplace inspections, audits and assurances activities across operations, plant and infrastructure to verify compliance and effectiveness of controls.
* Ensure workplace competence and capability through ensuring the implementation of effective training, induction, supervision and verification processes, including oversight of mandatory WHS training requirements for employees and contractors.
* Lead and develop leaders and teams in incident and event management, including investigation, reporting, corrective actions and learning and ensure emergency response arrangements are implemented, tested and effective.
* Manage and monitor contractor safety performance, worker consultation and engagement processes, and health surveillance programs to ensure compliance and continuous improvement.
* Maintain full compliance with applicable statutory health and safety obligations and regulatory requirements.
* Act as the key interface with regulators as required.

About You

You will be a proven safety leader with a strong track record of influencing and sustaining a positive safety culture across complex operations.

You will have:

* Tertiary qualifications in Health and Safety or a related discipline.
* Demonstrated experience leading the uplift of safety culture and capability across an organisation, driving engagement, accountability, and continuous improvement.
* Strong working knowledge of Victorian OHS and mining legislation, safety management systems, and incident investigation methodologies (including ICAM).
* Proven ability to lead and assure safety compliance across multiple teams, contractors, and concurrent projects.
* Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build credible, trusted relationships at all levels of the organisation.
* A proactive, solutions - focused approach to risk management, with the confidence to challenge unsafe practices.
* Experience in strategic planning, including setting safety objectives, developing improvement plans, and monitoring performance against key safety metrics.
* Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise, plan, and deliver outcomes in a dynamic operational environment.
