Primary objective
Assist the Farm Manager in the operation of the Arid Zone Research Institute (AZRI) and Old Man Plains Research Farms and
provide a high level of technical expertise in research farm operations.
Context statement
The AZRI and Old Man Plains Research Farms provide facilities to conduct agricultural research and extension. This position
ensures the Research Farms are research-ready and that animal welfare and Work Health and Safety requirements are met.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Assist the Farm Manager to coordinate and manage Research Farm operations, and to supervise and direct Research Farm staff.
1. Undertake day-to-day work on the Research Farms, including management of livestock, rangelands and crop trials, and
operating and maintaining machinery and equipment.
3. Assist the Farm Manager in the safe and efficient operation of the Research Farms, including the development and
implementation of WHS initiatives which positively encourage the workplace safety culture.
1. Assist in the implementation of long-term development plans of the Research Farms.
2. Facilitate research and extension programs and be involved in extension activities such as field days and demonstrations.
3. Undertake accurate data collecting and recording activities and maintain farm records.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. An appropriate Degree or Diploma in Agriculture or related field, and / or considerable relevant experience.
2. Demonstrated experience in livestock and mixed farming management operations including cattle handling, mustering, and
animal husbandry practices.
3. Ability to operate and maintain a wide range of farm machinery and equipment used in agricultural production
4. Demonstrated experience in farming facilities and infrastructure maintenance including welding.
5. Demonstrated management and supervisory skills, and ability to work with limited supervision.
6. Ability to interact positively with the public, contractors and government staff working on the farm.
7. Demonstrated Workplace Health and Safety leadership and proven ability to assist with managing workplace risks and
promoting a safety culture.
8. Hold a current, or have the ability to obtain, an NT Heavy Rigid drivers licence and drive a manual 4WD vehicle.
Desirable
1. Experience in operating and maintaining crop irrigation.
2. Hold a current First Aid Certificate or have the ability to obtain and maintain this qualification.
