Position Summary
The purpose of the Intervention Worker position is to effectively engage, screen, assess, refer, provide interventions, and coordinate care for young people aged 12‐25 years that contact or are referred to Headspace.
As one of the first contact points for young people accessing Headspace, the Intervention Worker will need to build a positive rapport with a wide range of young people, as well as their family and friends.
The Intervention Worker will need to be skilled in assessing a young person's needs, including complex risk assessments and the ability to action a plan to mitigate any identified risk.
They will participate in regular clinical supervision and will be required to present and discuss cases with the clinical care team.
The Intervention Worker will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, including core clinical workers, contractor clinical workers (General Practitioners and Allied Health Practitioners), consortium partners delivering core streams of mental health, physical and sexual health, vocational and educational support, and core non‐clinical workers. They will also work closely with local community and partner youth and health services to provide holistic and integrated care.
Key Responsibilities
Intake and Assessment
* Relate to young people in a manner which is relevant and appropriate to their developmental and cognitive level of functioning and provide services in a youth friendly manner.
* Conduct bio‐psycho‐social assessments of young people presenting to the service using the Headspace assessment tool and document the results of assessment and screening.
* Conduct risk assessments including assessment of suicide and violence risk, developing action plans to mitigate any risks, and providing follow up support and referral for treatment.
* Promptly consult with clinical lead regarding high‐risk presentations to the Clinical Lead for appropriate action.
* Carry out assessments, case planning, delivery of therapeutic and/or psychoeducational interventions and care coordination for young people and their families.
* The opportunity to develop and co‐facilitate psychoeducational, psychosocial, and therapeutic group programs.
* Monitor young people for critical changes and initiate appropriate emergency procedures.
* Refer young people to internal and external services as appropriate and provide follow up support.
* Facilitate and monitor the integration and coordination of care to young people, including active participation in care review meetings.
* If required, participate in outreach (travel), telehealth and home visit modes of service delivery for young people and their families as well as centre based.
* Participate in the access and intake system, answering phone calls and enquiries, screening and assessing needs, prioritising, and making appropriate follow up appointments and referrals.
* Maintain up to date clinical records and comply with data collection standards.
* Ensure that electronic medical records are maintained in line with agreed protocols.
* Ensure effective communication with, and involvement of, Headspace workers, young people and their families and friends.
Intervention
* Provide clinical interventions and brief interventions to young people with mild to moderate mental health presentations including the direct use of a range of Focused Psychological Strategies.
* Provide screening and assessment for alcohol and other drugs use, provision of alcohol and other drugs information, including harm reduction strategies.
* Conduct thorough risk assessments as required throughout an episode of care, including assessment of suicide risk and violence, and provide follow up support, intervention and referrals as needed.
* Provide care based on age and stage of development, family inclusive practice matched to young person's age and developmental stage.
Community Engagement
* Contribute to community engagement to represent Headspace and promote the centre's services at community awareness events.
* Recruit, train, supervise and support young people to be involved in the Headspace Youth Reference Group and/or develop other mechanisms to engage young people with the work of Headspace.
* Work closely with the Headspace team to ensure that the views of young people and families are integrated into service planning and service delivery.
General Duties
* Promote the program, communicate regularly with and build and maintain collaborative working relationships with program partners and all relevant stakeholders in the program.
* Maintain an open-minded and flexible approach to the work whilst maintaining the best practice principles contained within the Code of Conduct, policies and procedures of Youturn.
* Contribute to a positive representation of Youturn through supportive and positive working relationships with staff, young people, their families/carers/kin, stakeholders and the wider community.
* Participate in service staff meetings and professional development with the relevant Line Manager and other staff as appropriate.
* Participate in appropriate education to develop and maintain necessary knowledge and skills required to fulfil the responsibilities of the position.
* As an employee, work in a healthy and safe manner and encourage others to do the same; comply with all warning and safety signage; report or rectify any unsafe conditions; adhere to workplace health and safety policies and procedures.
* Perform other reasonable duties as directed, that are within the employee's skill, competence, training and scope of the employee's award classification.
* From time to time, Youturn may require you to work in areas that are not your normal work areas and perform functions that are outside of your usual duties. Youturn may require you to do this so long as you have the skills and training to perform the functions that are outside of your normal work areas or usual duties.
Desired Skills And Experience
Essential Experience, Qualifications & Other Requirements
Essential
* Hold, or be working towards, full Registration with the Psychology Board of Australia and/or be an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker, Occupational Therapist or Mental Health Nurse or Mental Health Counsellor whose skills, training and experience are equivalent to the requirements outlined within the Australian Counselling Association Scope of Practice Guidelines at a minimum Level 3 or above relating to education requirements, post‐qualification experience, clinical / workplace supervision and client contact hours.
* Tertiary qualification in Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, or Mental Health Nursing.
* Knowledge of local youth/health sectors.
* Knowledge and understanding of trauma informed practice.
* Hold a current 'C' class Open Driver's License.
* Hold a current Working With Children Check (WWCC) issued by the relevant State or Territory. Example, Blue Card.
* Hold or be eligible to apply for a Licensed Care Suitability Check issued by the Department of Child Safety, Youth Justice, and Multicultural Affairs.
* High levels of professionalism, confidentiality, and discretion.
* Positive and collaborative team worker.
* Adaptability and flexibility to changing work environments and requirements.
Selection Criteria
* Knowledge and understanding of mental health, evidence-based interventions and clinical practice as well as demonstrated excellence in the practical application of such, in the areas of youth mental health and alcohol and drug use.
* Demonstrated ability to undertake initial screening activities and a comprehensive bio‐psycho‐social assessment to determine care needs and provide appropriate follow up support.
* Experience in the delivery of therapeutic interventions, counselling services and treatment planning.
* The ability to conduct interventions with young people which include the direct use of a range of focused Psychological Strategies.
* Highly developed written/verbal communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to engage with young people, advocate on their behalf and establish and maintain effective relationships with workers, young people, carers, and stakeholders.
* Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver individual or group‐based skills training activities to assist young people's psychosocial functioning (e.g. life skills, anger management, problem solving, conflict resolution, etc.).
* Demonstrated ability to apply risk management strategies within a clinical context.
