About the team


The Protective Security section is part of the Integrity Branch within the Chief Counsel & Integrity Division. Our goal is to enable the Department to achieve its objectives lawfully and with integrity. The Integrity Branch plays a critical role in building and maintaining the department's pro-integrity culture. The Branch is responsible for the development and delivery of strategies for Protective Security, Probity, Fraud and Corruption, and Risk and Integrity Strategy. The Physical Security Team ensures the effective day-to-day management of security across all DISR properties.

The position of Physical Security Advisor will primarily focus on Physical Security, but the Protective Security Section also manage Personnel Security, Information Security, Security Strategy and Response functions. You will be exposed to all elements of Security with the ongoing support from the broader Security Team. This role will provide opportunities to develop and apply subject matter expertise in Security (including working with the National Intelligence Community).


Our ideal candidate


We are seeking a talented professional to perform the role of APS5 Physical Security Advisor, within DISR's head office located in Industry House in Canberra.

Our ideal candidate will have:

* A strong sense of ethics and responsibility to protect the Departments People, Information and Assets.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with team members and stakeholders.
* Demonstrated sound judgement in an environment of complex and competing priorities with a strong work ethic; flexible can-do attitude; outcome-focused; and a strong team player.
* An understanding of, or relevant experience in applying, Commonwealth Government security requirements, including the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF).

As an Integrity Branch APS5, and in accordance with the APS work level standards and integrated leadership standards you will:

* Undertake moderately complex to complex work under limited direction.
* Be accountable for organising and prioritising workflow and making independent decisions within your area of responsibility.
* Provide policy advice based on relevant policies and legislation.
* Conduct research and analysis, investigations, and procedural or operational tasks.
* Perform clerical, administrative support, or operational duties.
* Engage in public contact, providing advice to a wide range of customers and external stakeholders.
* May supervise lower-level employees, manage staff performance, allocate work, and identify on-the-job training opportunities.


What you will do


The APS5 Physical Security Advisor will assist in the management of physical security operations across all DISR sites nationwide.

The successful candidate's principal responsibilities include:

* Administering the use of physical security systems and resources across all DISR facilities. This includes, but is not limited to, electronic access control systems, keys and key cabinets, security containers, security alarms, intruder detection systems, national guarding services and CCTV surveillance.
* Undertake routine physical security inspections of DISR sites across Australia, including the preparation of site inspection reports and briefing papers.
* Monitor, document, and issue security breaches resulting from non-compliance with the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF) and departmental security and breach management policies.
* Ensure accurate recording of incidents, support investigations, and contribute to continuous improvement of security practices through analysis and escalation of non-compliance trends.
* Administratively support the zone accreditation process in accordance with the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF) and relevant Australian Government security guidelines. Administratively support accreditation requirements through assessment, documentation, and liaison with stakeholders to maintain appropriate physical and procedural controls.
* Provide security compliance advice to the department in line with the PSPF.

Assist in the preparation and management of security governance, including physical security policies and standard operating procedures.


Eligibility


To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.

The position requires a Negative Vetting 2 (NV2) security clearance, and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.


Notes


The department currently offers flexible work opportunities for many roles. Due to the nature of this role, the successful applicant will be required to primarily work from DISR's Canberra office, although flexible or remote work arrangements will be considered.
