Senior Technical Specialist - Data Performance Engineer
Optus is an Australian telecommunications company, delivering more than 11 million services to our customers every day across mobile, broadband and digital solutions.
We're looking for a Senior Technical Specialist – Data Performance to join our Probe and Observability team in Macquarie Park, playing a critical role in monitoring, analysing, and optimising the performance of mobile and fixed data services across the Optus network.
This is a hands‐on technical role for someone who thrives on deep data analysis, proactive performance optimisation, and solving complex network challenges at scale across 4G, 5G, Fixed, IoT and Enterprise networks and services.
About the role
As a Senior Technical Specialist – Data Performance, you'll leverage advanced probe and analytics platforms to proactively identify, troubleshoot, and resolve complex data performance issues, ensuring an exceptional customer experience.
You'll work closely with RAN, Core, Transport, Planning and Voice Performance teams, helping drive Optus' transformation toward a modern, data‐driven observability model.
What you'll be doing
* Develop, implement and maintain real‐time dashboards and reports tracking end‐to‐end data performance KPIs and KQIs across RAN, EPC/5GC and Transport layers
* Monitor and analyse key data KPIs such as average user throughput, latency, packet loss and session setup success rates to quantify and improve customer experience
* Proactively identify long‐term performance bottlenecks and capacity constraints within the packet core and user plane environments
* Leverage Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) to analyse application‐layer performance, including web browsing, video streaming and gaming services
* Perform complex data tracing and correlation across multiple interfaces to identify root causes of data session failures or persistent low throughput
* Collaborate with RAN optimisation, Core engineering, Planning teams and Voice Performance Engineers to diagnose and resolve performance issues
* Support capacity planning teams through detailed analysis of traffic mix, usage patterns and resource utilisation
* Contribute to the continuous improvement of observability practices, including future network slicing performance assurance and SLA monitoring
About you
* Degree‐qualified in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
* Strong experience in data network performance, packet core optimisation or IP network assurance within an MNO environment
* In‐depth knowledge of 4G and 5G Core data planes, including protocols such as GTP‐U/C, PFCP and key user‐plane interfaces
* Solid understanding of the TCP/IP protocol stack and its impact on application performance
* Hands‐on experience with carrier‐grade monitoring and assurance tools
* Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to interpret large and complex network data sets
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate technical insights into clear outcomes for engineering and operational stakeholders
Why you'll love working at Optus
